A few years ago he paid off $5000 of his indebtedness, and now is sending out checks covering S16.0C0 more. Before he departs for California, he says, ne win have pa hi off everything. The dbts were outlawed nearly 15 years ago and could never have been collected, but Chamberlain said he always feit morally obligated to repay his cred itors, and in order to do that denied himself everything but the bare neces sities of life for II years. James Rice, homeless, admitted In the Center street Police Court that he walked Into Has kel Grubert's secondhand store, put on a $15 overcoat and walked out with It. I would pay for the coat." said Hice. "if 1 had a chance. Therefore I maintain that the ownership of the coat is in doubt. Rice had no clothing to speak of and he complained that .It was cold in the Tombs. Magistrate Levy held Rice for special sessions. "Can't I wear that overcoat?" plead ed Rice. Magistrate Levy whispered to a court attendant, who brought an over coat. "Try that on, commanded the mag istrate. Tt covered Rice completely. "That was my overcoat" said the court. "It is yours now. Magistrate Levy sent to his home for another overcoat and Rice went to the Tombs In a state of mind approaching stupefaction. MASHER REMEDY IS FOUND Chicago Police Stab In Chrietma-s Crowds toTrotect Girls.- "CHICAGO. Dec 11. Police Captain Halpin has assigned one of his huskiest detectives to mingle with the Christ mas crowds and protect Klrls from "mashers." The detective Is armed with a large needle, and when he discovers a "masher" ogling a g-lrl. moves along side and jabs the needle an Inch or so into the leg of the masher, depending largely upon the provocation. "The scheme works fine." said Cap tain Halpin. "There is never any argu ment. The masher lets out a howl, but he Invariably 'beats It.' consider this a fairly good counter-irritant for the use of the needles by these mashers. The one we use Is not poisoned, but It does the work." MULES IN GREAT DEMAND Sale Brings $60,000 When S00 Head Go In Missouri Country. FULTOJf. Mo, Dec 11. The season's first big sale of fat Callaway County mules, famed the world over, was ne gotiated when Charles Dunn and Frazler Robcett disposed of 200 head to a St. Louis mule firm. The mules brought better than $200 a head. It Is reported, making the sale aggregate approximately HO. 000. The mules made up a train load and will be sqld to Southern buyers at the St. Louis market. Three patrol men and a sergeant of police pounding their way up the stairs of the tenement at 283 Bleecker street in full cry after Tabblt awoke the 20 families living in the six-story tenement shortly after :30 o'clock this morning. A few minutes previously Patrolman Flanagan of the Charles Street station. on fixed post at Bleecker and Com. erce streets, saw a wagon on whlcn two men were seated oomlng rapidly t the street. Directly in the path or the wagon lay something of a grayish- white color. Flanagan poKea n who his nightstick and a rabbit about two feet long. 10 inches high and with white spot on its chest scampered off. Flanagan rapped on the pavement with his nightstick and notified Sergeant Hart and Patrolmen Cahill and Krause n the vicinity that sorfretning unusual was up. All three came running aown the street lust in time to dodge what they believed to be a polecat- Flanagan reassured them, however. and all four set out In pursuit after unny. After chasing the rabbit into the hallwav at 283 Bleecker street and up three flights of stairs br'er rabbit turned tail and dodged back, escaping by a hare's breadth, as 'twere, through the legs of the scrambling cops. The shouts and scuffling of trie pa trolmen awoke the tenants of the bulld- ng and word was quickly passed along that someone had been murdered and that a blackmailer bad been caught in the act of planting his nightly bomb. Flanagan, however, continued the chase and finally fell flat on tne raoDit. Proudly displaying his trophy by its ears. Flanagan marched into tne Charles Street Station a few minutes ater. "What have you got there?" de manded Lieutenant Lyons. Search me," said Flanagan, wno only visits the Bronx Zoo In the sum mer time. "Looks like a wild animal f some kind."
