fllE -MORNING OREGONIAN, MONDAY, JULY 28, 1913. 9 COLTS 1ST QUIT PORTLAND IN Baum Announces That Coast League Directors Closed Gates to Class B. M'CREDIE PROMISES FIGHT Owner of Northwestern Team Says He Has Club Over Atkin, Said to Be Prime Mover In AA Circuit for Xew Ruling. STATEMENT - OF A. T. BAOI, president of PAcnie COAST LEAGUE. SAN FRANCISCO, July 27. (Spe cial.) The Coast League directors at their last meeting discussed the Portland situation and it was gen erally agreed that Portland Is get ting too much baseball. Thereupon a resolution was Introduced and adopted, stating that it be the sense of the meeting that no outside league be allowed in Pacific Coast League territory after the season of 1918. A. T. BAUM. Apparently the clays of the North western League In Portland are num bered. To all intents and purposes the North westerners will have to - secure another city to take Portland's place or cut to four clubs as in 1910 when Port land and Aberdeen dropped out for one season. A. T. Baum, Coast League, president of the Pacific openly admitted in San Francisco the truth of the exclusive announcement in The Oregonian Sun- day. He said that the AA heads are unequivocally opposed to granting further extensions to the present class B lease In this city and that can mean only one thing move. W. W. McCredie, president of both the Portland Coast and Northwestern clubs, acknowledged as much last night when shown Baum's statement. He said he would make a light to have the case reopened at the November meeting of the Coast directors if the Northwestern directors so dsired. "But," added the local magnate, "I guess this will be the last season of continuous ball In Portland." Colts May Go to Seattle. Simultaneously, President McCredie revived his argument In favor of plac ing -Nick Williams' present Portland B team in Seattle next year. He hardly thinks it possible that Spokane will be dropped, yet doesn't believe the North west heads will again invade the smaller cities, Everett, Belllngham, North Yakima or Walla Walla, for the sixth team. Fielder A. Jones, president of the Northwestern League, whose head quarters are In Portland, refused to comment on the probable reconstruc tion of his circuit. Owner McCredie stuck to his asser tion that the Coast League directors chose a poor time to stick a knife Into the B league vitals. He said the res olution should properly have come up after the close of the season. "I do not agree with the other Coast directors that the Northwest League cuts into our Coast attendance here," declared McCredie, "Poor weather and the slow start of the Coast club are to blame for, the slight decrease in our attendance. I can show figures proving that we are drawing Just as well as In previous seasons under similar condi tions." McCredie Makes Threat. Jack Atkln, new owner of the Sacra mento club. Is believed to be the prime mover behind the anti-Northwestern fight. Atkin wailed continuously at the alleged poor attendance on his last trip north early In July. He attributes the falling off entirely to the class B competition. . "Well, I am glad to hear that Sacra mento is doing so well at home as to warrant Atkln's kicking about us," added McCredie, ominously, "Sacra mento Is getting an edge on the per centage of gate receipts away from home 45 per cent to be exact and perhaps we can clip off that extra dividend. I wonder how Atkin would like that?" Which veiled threat, combined with McCredie's announcement that he may fight to have the case reopened, may be taken to Indicate some lively times ahead before the matter is adjusted. Todd, Who Built Lark 8, Now GroomlnK Grayling for Race With Sparrow, rIFTEEN years ago Captain C. F. Todd built a shallow spoonlike boat, on which he placed about 600 feet, of sail. It was a crude affair, but it in augurated the Oregon Yacht Club, the sport of boating in Northwestern waters and the Astoria regatta. Todd was "the founder of the Yacht Club, which began to make Its pres ence felt one year after Todd made this boat. It was called "Lark 68," for then all boats of that type were registered with the Y a c htlng Associa tion, and Todd's boat was only the 68th of the pattern. The Astoria regatta then was but a conclave of the fish ermen. Todd hied Capt. H. F. Todd, himself to the Fish Metropolis and soon had the regatta started on Its present basis. He took the "Lark 68" to the meet, and for several years cleaned the field against anything with sails. Then Todd began to build his long string of shallops: the Skylark, Zephyr, Comet, Fore 'N Aft and Gray ling. They have not all been winners, but they were all good racers. Now he is grooming the Grayling to take the measure of Frank Creasey's Sparrow. ana wnue ne nas been defeated a num ber of times he has the spirit that says "never die." Accidents Sometimes Correct Themselves Second Bans From Ball on Ed Fin ney's Ear Restores Hearrinat Lost by First Swat. INJURIES cut considerable Ice in base ball, even if the thermometer does rather take the edge off the metaphor at this writing:. Of all the freak accident "sufferers," Ed Finney, Coast League umpire, holds the laurelbaum. Over a year ago EHn ney lost the hearing: in his southpaw ear, as a result of a foul tip dent while working: a game here in Portland. Imagine his surprise, then, when a sec ond hybrid clout recently whacked him on the same auricle and righted the wrong- done by the first one. Finney now is as "ambidextrous" with his hearing apparatus as the next one. This has some disadvantages, of course; for instance, Ed can hear all the cussing in the plant, but on the whole Finney rather prefers his pres ent acute sense of hearing. Harry Wolverton and "Pop" .Dillon both owe their present fat Jobs to "beneficial" accidents. Wolverton broke into baseball as a pitcher at Dubuque, la., but something snapped in his good right arm one day, and it looked curtains for him on the diamond. A fortnight later the man ager found himself pressed for a third baseman, and Wolverton was shoved In. The first few chances were easy, and he lobbed the ball over, but finally came one which necessitated a hard throw. Wolverton bit his lips, offered a prayer and cut loose with all the fervor of his being. . Something popped. A misplaced nerve or wandering ligament slipped back into place and Wolverton was never bothered from that moment. That's how he began as a third Backer. Ping Bodie once bumped into Dillon, of the Angels, at first base and knocked several disarranged links in his spine back into position.
