THE MORNING OSEGOMAX. MONDAY, JTTJfE 9. 1913. 13 MILL SITES SOUGHT Washington Lumber Interests Seek Entry to Oregon. OREGON CITY IS INSPECTED Business Along Projected Railroads Desired and Point on Willam ette Is Admitted to Be Fa-vora-ble by Investigator. OREGON CITY. Or., June 8. (Spe cial.) Amen? the visitors to Oregon City Saturday, to view the features of the Rose Show celebration here, was T-loyd H. Cahart, a repreeentatlve of a (rroup of Pueret Sound lumber milling interests, who is "scouting" in the Wil lamette Valley for suitable sites for branch mills of the big Northern or ganizations. "While here Mr. Cahart Journeyed to the north of the city limits, and looked over some land in what is known as the "China gardens." In the course of the day he met a num ber of local land owners and business men. and while not imparting a great deal of information himself, asked many questions as to the resources of the community. Its probable develop ment, and other matters affecting the future. Before leaving for Portland, en route to Puget Sound, Mr. Cahart admitted that he was sent into Oregon by a number of Washington lumber mill men, who were planning branch Indus tries In the Willamette Valley and along the extensions of the Mill lines In Oregon. These millmen beliove that a considerable amount of development Will follow the bulldlngr of new inter urban and electric lines by the Hill people, and desire to gain the trade of these sections. While h would not make any definite statements as to the sites of these pro posed branch .mills and supply depots, Mr. Cahart did say that he believed the high bluff off the river north of Oregon City would make an admirable site for one of them. "I find that you have a number of things there that would prove ex tremely valuable to us." he said. "In the first place, there is a large tract of practically level land, bordered on one side by the river, and on the other by transportation lines. This land lies high above the river, so that it prob ably never will be flooded, and because of that, any plant constructed there would be able to keep in continuous operation. Tou also have near at hand, I find, a considerable territory that Is being reached by the Clackamas Southern Railroad, and beyond there is, I believe, a great deal of timber. It seems to me that this land north of the city would be doubly valuable to us on that account, for we might be able to get considerable timber for our work carried by the local road. This, when cut into lumber and inside wood. If it Is suitable for such, could then be hauled back to distributive yards along the line. "In Washington, we believe that an era of great development is fast ap proaching In all parts of Oregon, par ticularly In the Willamette Valley, and between the river and the coast. For business reasons we are anxious to get Into this field, and to help In its up building, for the more communities that spring up. the greater will be our busi ness." ELECTRIC STEEL WANTED Industrial Possibility for Oregon Told by Chicago Expert. SALKM, Or., June 20. (Special.) Re tarding his suggestion that with the power going to waste In this state Ore Bon could be made a leader In the manufacture of electric steel. State Engineor Lewis today received a letter from C. E. Potter, a steel expert of Chicago, In which he says: "The roads are eager for electrlo etepl even at the present high pre mium, as thoy realize that its use will pretty nearly solve the serious diffi culties under which they are now labor ing with other kinds of steel. It is entirely possible for you to establish an immense Industrial center adjacent to your proposed power development, and I sincerely hope that you can make the people of Oregon believe this. It would make Oregon a great mmmfac turtng state, a consummation well worth whatever preliminary pecuniary outlay that may be necessary to its ac complishment." SALEM SYSTEM IMPROVED Portland. Eugene & Eastern An nounces Xew Work at Capital. SALEM, Or.. June 8. (Special.)
