Flags at Half Mas.
The Flintshire displayed four flags
at half mast yesterday in observance
of the holiday, o'ne of these being
an American flag of generous propor
tions. All the ships in Portland harbor
had their flags at half mast, but the
RotsI Mail boat displayed more colors.
The direct connection with Europe
is of marked significance especially
through the Royal Mail Company, the
largest In the world, operating many
ships, owning ships totaling l.iOO.000
gross tons register, and charting about
Ti other Teasels. Some of the Royal
Mail liners running to South America
are more than 20.000 tons and make
a speed of more than JO knots. Their
passenger accommodations are equal to
the best to be found. These boats
carry guns for self defense and their
officers belong to the Royal Naval
Reserves.
A number of shlpa are being built
fer the Royal Mall Una for the Pacific
Coast via the Panama CanaL They
are of the latest and largest pattern.
Possibly they will run through to
Japan and connect with tha same line
steamers from London.
Officer Are Jfaval Reaerveaw
Tha Flintshire carries acrew of M
eoollea and 11 white men and, a stew
ardess. The last mentioned has had
nothing to do but care for a large
Angora cat since leaving Japan for
the reason that no passengers, except
ing one man. were carried beyond that
point. .
The officers are Englishmen who
have traveled much on many vessels.
Captain Cundry carries photographs
of his wife and three One fully-grown
younc women who are his daughter
He says that ha is a "home man" with
an occupation which compels him to
travel. He is an officer in the Royal
Naval Reserves, an honor shared also
by O. H. Oa-nshaw. second officer, and
J C. Vernon-Morgan, third officer. A.
Williams, first officer, being the only
exception.
Mr. Openshaw Inquired all about
