The fate of the melancholy Polar bear at the Washington Park Zoo" may hang on the decision of the voters on the park bond issue. For nearly ten years he has been an Inmate of a cage at the park, and dur ing all that time, with only slight in termissions in his waking hours, he has stood at one end of the cage and kept up a rhythmical, monotonous dance that "gets on the nerves" of all beholders. Some have even come to have the idea that he never ceases the exercise. Much pity is accorded the beast by park visitors, and frequently Superin tendent Mische, or members of the Park Board are asked either to kill him or take him back to his Northern home. I Now comes the Oregon Humane So-1 clety with a request that bruin be killed. The request was placed on file, pend ing the decision on the bond Issue at Monday's election. If the bonds carry he will be given new -and more com modious quarters. However, Superintendent Mische and others who know something of Polar bears and their ways do not expect him to discontinue his habit of dancing, or even to change its style.
