Wool factors nf long experience returned from extended trips through producing centers, where they had gone to Investigate conditions ana par tlcularly to learn the volume of wool, for eign and domestic bald on the leading sea board marketa Tha opinion rem is ma the available supply Is smaller than In many veara at this season. Coming .tariff legis lation haa disturbed the trade greatly. Holder of wool hav been liquidating for some time, and as there has been compara- tlvely little buying of new clip domestic wool, dealers are la better ahapa to face tha changes that are coming than they were before tha Wilson bill went Into effect. According to good authorities, the ststls tlcal position could not bo better. The leading Boston dealers ire reported to have leas wool In their warehouses tnsn in over a decade, while the spinners have not much raw material In excess of what Is required to complete contracts. Soma yarn menu facturers ara saJ to have no scoured or creasy wool on hand, their holdings con latins of tons only. Spinning and weaving mills, according to tfe vmiI merchants referred to. are shut ting down spindles and looms when orders are finished. WHEAT TUIOTY No Apprehension as to Kansas Crop Outcome. RAIN WILL REMEDY DAMAGE Promise of Biff World's Shipments Causes Longs to Take Present Profits Selling Done at Expense of Shorts. CHICAGO, May 23. Statements that rain within a week or so would correct much of the crop damage in Kansas served today to temper bullish enthusiasm regard ing wheat. The market closed heavy from unchanged to c below. Other leading sta ples all showed net gains corn He to Ho, oats 9:8"4c to Hac and provisions 2Vio to 5c to 22ic. Big world shipments promised made wheat longs willing to take- profits. This was done largely at the expense of 11th hour Investors and btlated shorts, who for a while carried the market sharply higher. When these buyers were finally supplied, however, prices fell fcack limp. Primary receipts of wheat today were 453.000 bushels, a year ago 506,000 bushels. Seaboard clearances ot wneai ana nour equaled 496,000 bushels. In corn, the fact that tne country naa tightened up on offerings led to covering by a nunvber of big shorts. Oat advanced because of assertions that the seven chief producing states would have one-third less to sell this season than the preceding. Packers buying through commission- houses gave- provisions an upturn after early weakness, due to a liberal run or hogs. Leading futures ranged as follows: WHEAT. Open. High. Low. "Close. After a sharp controversy before the street committee of the City Council yesterday as to whether wood blocks or another type of pavement snoma oa used on the repaving of Fourth street from Jefferson street north, the com mittee, by a vote of to 3, adopted a recommendation that wood blocks be used. Although wood blocks would cost about $7000 more than other paving on the work to be done, 47 per cent of the property owners affected, exclusive of the city and county property on the street, asked that they be used. George W. Bates represented the minority of the property owners In asking tnat asphalt or some type of pavement other than wood blocks be put aown. The ordinance proposing that com panies using the streets for poles for the transmission of power or messages should remove them if it appeared that their removal was for the public good was recommended for passage. The protest of A. E. Barnes and others who use the Kings Heights and Calvary streetcar lines that they were being charged two fares within the city limits, contrary to the franchise hel-d by the streetcar company, was referred to City Attorney Grant for investigation. The protest of the Citizens Bank and others against the proposed Improve ment of East Forty-first street was overruled and the ordinance recom mended for passage. The contract for the improvement of Cactus Drive was recommended to be awarded to Gieblsch & Joplin, lowest bidders. at.SS65o.52.
