CARLSBAD differ from most of the
Continental watering places In
that whilst amusements and dis
traction are properly provided for, th
first consideration Is the "cure."
It perrades and regulates ttf life
of the town. It takes possession of
you the moment you step from, one of
the special trains from Paris, Berlin,
Petersburg or Vienna, and you find
your life arranged for you upon well-thought-out
principles of health.
You are not called upon to make any
t-pecial effort, everybody Is doing: the
name tbini?, you would find It an ef
fort to do otherwise. You are required
merely to fall Into line, the rest la done
lor you.
At your hotel you will not need to
worry as to whether you may eat this
or that, the kitchen Is under the con
trol of and subject to Inspection at
any time by the medical society of
Carlsbad.
As soon 'as It Is known you are a
"Cure truest" you will only receive
"cure-diet." Of course If you are on
pleasure then It Is another matter. Is
there too much starch In the bread you
eatT If there were and the doctor dis.
covered It. that bakery might be closed.
Besides you have another protection.
Your rolls are packed and appear at
table. In a separate tissue paper bap
with the composition of the bread
printed on the back.
Are you doubtful about the milk?
There Is an Inspector stationed on
every road leading Into Carlsbad, and
it would not be good business for that
dalrvman whose milk or butter were
found wanting. Nor Is this inspection
-nnfinwl merelv to dairy produce; fruit.
vegetables, meat must all undergo, the
strictest examination.
And so throughout yow three or four
weeks' stay, you will be unconsciously
ih. Akii nf a thousand little atten-.
.ook ih. result of centuries of
experience and only exercised after that
experience has proved mem to ue
flclal to health.
The season at Carlsbad this year
i.rnmi, to be an exceptionally bril
liant one. especially In regard to Amer
ican and Knglish visitors. Never be
rr. ai-cordinar to hotel keepers, have
so many advance orders been received.
As early as last Christmas rooms had
K..n tiookod for the 1913 season.
The fact Is that "Carlsbad has mad
n,-h strides in the matter of rchitec
tural and other improvements during
the last two or three years that when
It is made ready lor ins rusn ui iu
season It presents a spic and span
appearance that makes a special appeal
to those two nations quite, apart from
the Indubitable medicinal qualities of
Its mineral waters.
The Sprudel has been provided this
year with a new marble basin and the
gprudel Colonnade has been further em
bellished under the direction of Profes
sor Ohmann. of Vienna, with some very
handsome carving work.
A great many royalties are expected
this year and given fine weather there
la little doubt that many records will
be broken.
Century of Peace to Be
Observed
KspealthtB Will Be Held at Shep
herd's Bosh, I.uBdoa. Ik 1914.
The Anglo-American Bxpositlon to
he held next year io celebration of the
100 years of peace and progress of the
Kngilsh-speaklng peoples, will be a
means of strengthening the bonds of
friendship and kinship between the
American and British nations.
The Exposition will be held at Shep
herd's Bush. London, between May and
October of 1S14, and will demonstrate
In a practical manner the progress
which has been made by the British
and American people In every branch
of trlvillsation during that century, and
will also place In view In chronological
order the great achievements of that
epoch.
. The Exposition will reflect 100 years
of the history of the two nations
their famous statesmen, authors, artists,
inventors, philanthropists, financiers,
merchants and manufacturers and oth
ers, men and women who have helped
in the advancement of civilization and
In making each nation what it Is to
day, will be represented, with such
objects of historical interest- as are as
sociated with them and their times.
A century of advancement In edu
cation, science, literature, inventions,
and production, improvements and com
forts in social life, betterment of the
working men and women. In placing
before the world the outcome of their
intellect and genius will be shown. The
Exposition will, also show. In practical
ways the advancement in navigation,
in railway transport. In girder, sus
pension and cantilever bridges, the use
of steel in architecture, the boring of
tunnels, underground and overhead
railways, aqueducts. liKhthouses, the
work of the Panama Canal, printing

light, the storage of power, pneumatic
dispatch. the telegraph, telephone,
wireless, photography, the discovery of
new metals, the advancement in min

great advance In agricultural machlij'
ery and all kinds of labor-saving de
vices, the marvelous acnievements in

ent undertaking than It was some 20
years ago. The changeless East Is still
unchanged. But the hand of Modern
ity has wrought some very desirable
changes In hotel life and In the highly
Important matter of railway transit.
The visitor today finds himself steeped
In all the wonderful glamor, the strange
calm and mysticism of the East, but
he has only to stretch forth a hand to
avail himself of the thousand-and-one
amenities and comforts and facilities
of twentieth century life.
The American is surprised to find
that he can luxuriate In fast, smooth
gliding trains de luxe such as he Is ac
customed to at home.
The Egyptian State Railways are es
sentially modem, if they do serve the
most ancient places In the world.
A. round of charmfng excursions may
be enjoyed on an economical outlay.
The tombs of Bent-Hassan, cut out of
the living rock some 4i00 years ago;
Tel-cl-Amarna, with Its vastly Interest
ing remains of ancient grandeur; AsslT
out, the largest city of upper Egypt;
Abydos. with the temple of that name,
built by Setl I. father of Rameses the
Great; Dendera, with the famous tem
ple, displaying the curious mixture of
Egyptian and Greek art, owing to the
Influence -of the Greeks of the late;
Ptolemaic period, one of the very Egyp
tian temples with the roof Intact, and
wonderful Luxor, with Its antiquities
and traces of the splendor of Thebes
nd the Kameses.
All these points of Interest are linked
up with Cairo by the Egyptian state
railways, and Itineraries can be ar
ranged at any tourist offices to take
In the most Important of these on a
circumscribed etcpenditure.
