Issue of the Boston Commercial Bulletin
says:

tically or wholly cleaned up. Quotations
are only nominal.
The demand for foreign hair is not henry
for stocks here, which are also very lim
ited and the demand In Bradford Is also
said to be practically curtailed for this side

has been done for this side In that market.

Farmers and Other Holders Ask Outside
Prices California Inquiring.
The local wheat market was extremely
firm yesterday. There were practically no
sMlers In the country, and local speculators
end brokers refused to let go except at
outside prices. The continued advance at
t'hlcago and Liverpool was responslbls for
the strength of the maret. Buyers, how
ever, refused to raise their bids and trad
ing was consequently light. There .were
further Inquiries from California, but the
buyers In ths South would not corns up In
their Ideas to a point that would permit
of business.

Dealers Reduce Storks by Culling Prices on
Cheap Sort.
By shading prices on the cheaper grades
of apples, local dealers managed to worK
off a considerable supply yesterday sev
eral large sales were made at 30, 40 and (0
cents a box. The chespest of this fruit
was a short time ago quoted at 50 cents
The market became top heavy and It was
found necessary to do something to move
ths fruit. Fairly steady prices are being
maintained oa the bettter grades.
A ear of rhubarb was received yefterday
and offered at the prices of the former car.
St to 12.10 per box. Rhubarb is firm In
California, owing to continued cold weather.
Asparagus was lower at lOijllc a pound.
Wool Dealers Not Apprehensive.
Xo great apprehension Is fvlt by Eastern
wool 4ncn concerning the tariff at the mo
ment, says the Boston- Commercial Bulletin.
Chairman X'nderwood. of the ways and
means committee of the Houte. Is quoted
as saying that he looks for a duty oa raw
wool not to exceed 15 per cent, with a much
better balanced schedule on tops, yarns and
goods. Schedule K will unquestionably be
tha first schedule of the tariff to coma up
for consideration, latest advices indicating
that tha tarirf will be again considered.

A steady demand for low-grade hops con
tlnuea H. L. Hart yesterday bought 26T
bales, all small lots, at 11 '4 to 15 cents.
There was a sals of bales between Salem
dealers.
A contract for 12.000 pounds of tha new
crop at Is cents was written yesterdsy.
Better Supply of Dressed Meats.
X:eeelpts of dressed pork were larger yes
terday, but tha demand was good and the
market was firm at 11 H 012 cents. Veal
was steady and unchanged.
Ths poultry market was strong with ths
supply light. Former prices were quoted.
Kegs, butter and cheese were firm and
unchanged.

SHORTHORN CATTLE.
Day's Rnn Is Light and Market Con
ditions Are Unchanged! Con
tract Sheep Received.
The attraction at tha stockyards yester
day was the Shorthorn sale and there was
not much interest In ths regular market.
Tha run of cattle and hogs was tight and
the sheep received were for delivery on
contract- Price conditions were unchanged.
Two loads of steers were sold at $7.25 and
$7 and heifers, cows and bulla sold at tha
former rani;e of prices.
Only three hog sales were reported and
the best lot offered did not touch tha for
mer top quotation by a nickel.

In another column.
Recepits were: 124 cattle, 10 calves, 114
hogs, V29 sheep and 18 horses. Shippers
were: T. Burns & Co., Redmond. 1 car of
cattle and horses; William Shepard. Trout

opened steady at an advance of 20 to 25
points In response to higher European ca
bles, covering for over the Easter holidays
and buying for a reaction. Thera was
pressure from local bears, and with later
French cables showing reactions, prices here
eased off from the best. The market
steadied while still showing a net gain of
from 10 to 16 points, however, and was
finally steady on covering with last prices

NEW TORK. March 20. Trading In
stocks ' which usually figure most promi
nently In tha market was on almost a nom
inal basis today.
Liquidation continued among tha Indus
trials, which recently have been subjected
to severe pressure, and thera wera further
declines. Rumely was most prominent of
these stocks, falling to 456tt. a new low
record for tha movement. Sears-Roebuck,
which developed strength early in the day,
later reacted points from Its high price.
New Haven, after its long period of
Spring rose 2 on resumption of dividends.
Csll money touched 6 Is per cent, al
though thera was an easier tendency In the
time money market.' Rates for mercantile
paper stiffened, with soma transactions at
6 per cent. Tha weekly statement of the
Bank of England reflected no Improvement
In tha position of that Institution.
February railroad reports began to come
In today. Baltimore A Ohio's statement
showed a smaller gain In net than recently.
Although gross earnings rose $560,000. the
advance In net was only $28,000. owing to
enlarged expenditures for maintenance and
transportation.
The Stock Exchange will be closed tomor
row and Saturday.
Bonde were irregular. Total sales, par val
ue, $1,460,000. United States 3s and 4s and
Panama &a advanced ft on call on tha week.

MILK ORDINANCE DRAFTED
Present Measure Is Said to Prevent
Prosecutions for Violations.
A proposed new milk ordinance
providing among other things
that all milk shall be sold in bottles
and that no milk below standard shall
be sold or offered for sale, will be
passed by the health board at a meet
ing at the City Hall this morning at 10
o'clock. The measure Is aimed to cover
defects in the present ordinance. It
has been prepared by City Milk Chem
ist Calloway.
Under the present ordinance it has
been found impossible to prosecute
dairymen or others for selling milk not
up to the standard In solids or butter-

ELLENSBURG, Wash.. March 20.
(Special.) To protest against the re
tention of boxes and booths in restau
rants In Ellensburg, a delegation of
club women attended the regular meet
ing of the City Council this week, and
were effective in having aa ordinance
passed which provides for their im
mediate removal.
In June the annual state convention
of Women's Clubs will meet v.ere, and
the local members are working hard to
'clean up" the town before the time of
the convention. Members of the
women's clubs wiir attend all Council
meetings in the future.

cited buying of wheat. The close was

ment of 7 ft to 10c.
Many stop loss orders tn tha last quar
ter hour of tha wheat market came an

advanced prices on themselves more than

proved scanty, and tha simultaneous de
cision of many traders to curtail risks, in

Cold wave predictions tended on the whole
to heighten bullish sentiment In wheat, but
soma authorities professed belief that the

Seaboard clearances of wheat and flour
equalled 261.00O bushels. Primary receipts
of wheat wera 669.000, as against 412.000
bushels a year ago.
Influential buying of July delivery
strengthened corn. Thera was considerable
realizing, however. In May. Much lighter
receipts formed a help on the. buying side.
Oata went up with other grain in conse
quence of covering by belated shorts.
In tha provision pit offerings went up and
In splta of lower prices at .the yards, ths
market advanced. The upturn was at
tributed chiefly to the bulge in grain.
