THE MORNING OBEGONIAN, SATURDAY, MARCH 15, li13. 17 APPLE TRADE SLOW Season Is Nearing End With Prices Weak.. MUCH LOW-GRADE FRUIT Eastern Markets Are Also Declining, bat Conditions Are Improving Abroad Crop Is 3Ioving From Antipodes. ' Apple sales on Front street are declining. Since, the first of the week the demand baa steadily fallen off and at the present time only the cheaper priced grades are called for. Stocks of all trades ax large and as a conaeonenco the market Is weak. Lower prices are almost certain In the near fu ture. Dealers are wonderlnr what will become of the surplus of cood apples. If there la anr loss It will fall mainly on the producers, aa few of the fruit Anna specu lated In apples this year. Conditions would not bo as bad as they are bad not so much poor fruit been thrown . on the maiket this season. Hundreds of cars of apples were pressed for sale that should have been turned into cider, dried or fed to stock. This would have left the market In shape to absorb all the rood ap ples produced. In the past few years, however, the Northwestern growers have done so well with their culls that they could not resist the temptation to put them on the market this year. The result has been prices so low on all kinds that no one has profited by the season's, operations. The Eastern markets are weak and declin ing. Box apples are plentiful in New Tork, but outside of something extra fancy prices are vey low, mostly 1 to $1.40. Ex tra fancy Winesaps In large sties have been selling there at J1.75 to 12.15. Spltx 1.30 to 12. Rome Beauties 11.15 to 11.75. Mostly all Staymans and Black Twigs have been showing up icaliiy and have been selling at 00 cents to 11.25. Whtlo the American markets are de pressed, the tendency of the British apple market Is an upward one. Canadian and New England fruit Is arriving too ripe and in bad condition, so that It la anticipated that really sound stock shipped out of New York should do well. The same condition of altalra should benefit good Pacific Coast Kewtowns. In the meantime much of the frolt going across from New Tork Is ar riving too ripe and in poor condition and la selling at ruinous prices. There Is a wide range accounted for by the difference In condition and quality, but for first-class fruit there Is a strong demand In Liverpool, London and Glasgow. Baldwins and Green ings have been selling generally In these markets at a range of 10s to 20s. Box fruit Is ranging at 7s od to 10s for Oregon New- towns, according to grade and slxe, and Ss to 7s for California New towns. At Hamburg last week box fruit sold as follows: Ben Davis, 7s to 6s Sd; winesaps, 7s to 9s; Rome Beauties, 6s 3d to 8s Sd; Oregon Kewtowns, 6s to 9s 6d. The Tasmanlan crop of apples la short and not more than 400,000 cases will be exported, as against 800.000 last year. Vic, toria will ship 100,000 more than last year. so that, roughly speaking, between Ade laide, Melbourne, Sydney and Hobart there will be 800,000 cases less than last season There Is. however, no quantity stated In connection with Western Australia, whlcl possibly will export 00,000 to 80,000 boxes. The first consignment from Western Aus tralia to Melbourne is expected to arrive at London about March 25. The bulk of these Tasmanlan apples go to London. i WHEAT MARKET IS WATTING ONE Only Enough Offering to Supply Limited Demand and Prices Are Steady. The wheat market la a waiting one, with prices holding their own. The tew buyers tnat come on the market pay the prices that are asked without hesitation, but If a dealer or miller does not actually . need grain, he will not purchase without con cessions. Prices are not being cut, how. ever, and the offerings are no more than sufficient to take care of the trade that is passing. The principal part of the bust ness recently done has been for account of Interior millers. In the local market bluestem was quoted at 0890 cents, club at 8087 cents and red at 85086 cent Weekly foreign wheat shipment were as follows: This wk. Last wk. Last yr. The first straight oar of rhubarb of the season will arrive Monday from San Le an dro. Express shipments received yester day were quoted at 8 cents. Asparagus was In demand at 12H015 cents. Vegetable sup piles of all kinds are increasing and with the better offerings and lower prices the trade la assuming normal proportions. yesterday's receipts Included one car of mixed vegetables, one car of cabbage, one ear of celery and an assortmanet of veg etablea by steamer, also two cars of bananas and one car of lemons. GERMAN' APPLE MARKET IS GOOD Western Fruit Is Known as Oregon and Is Finding Large Sale. Vloe-Consul-General Dawson, at Frank fort on the Main, says of'' apple market prospects In that city: "There Is an excellent market for Ameri can apples, although they are not Imported directly. Commission houses In this vicinity prefer to purchase Their supplies In the Hamburg market. "At the time of making my former re port It was anticipated that on account of the excellent fruit crop In Germany the demand for American apples would not be ss large as usual. Dealers Inform ns now, i however, that the market for American ap ples has been and still Is very good, and that large quantities of Western, generally descrlped her as Oregon, apples have been Imported during the present season. LOCAL EGG MARKET , IS FIRM Alaska and Seattle Order Reduce Local Stocks. Eggs were quoted firm on the street at 1S1SH cents. Good-sized orders from Alaska and Seattle, together with a better local demand absorbed all the offerings. The advance brought storage operations to a halt temporarily. Poultry receipts were light and the mar ket waa firm. Hens sold up to 11 cent, broilers were strong at -5 cents, and white ducks were in demand at 11 cents. Dressed pork waa scarce and firm at 11 0 1114 cent. Veal was steady. No changes were reported In the cheese sr butter markets. Sugar Market In Firm Position. Commenting on the position of the sugar market an Eastern trade authority says: "The recent big purchases of raws are is anticipation of a marked Improvement In the demaud for refined with the opening f the Spring season and due to the fact that in a short while from now there will be & lessening In the weekly production of the stops cf the West Indies two things that always advance prices and make Impossible throughout the balance of the year a re ts: such lew figure a have bees pre- vailing during the present period that is now passing of low consumption and tem porary big production."
