9 THE MOKMXU OKEGOMAA'. TtlUKSDAY, UKCfcLUBKK 5. 11)12. ) HOPS SELL FREELY Transfers Are at Rate of 1000 Bales Daily. MARKET REMAINS STEADY Purchases Are 3IostIy for Speculative and Foreign Account Improve ment in the English Situa tion After Recent SluSnp. Oregon ho pi are changing hands at the rate of about 1000 bales a day. The pur chases are partly for speculative account and partly for export. Very few of the lots recently bought, so far as can he learned, are for current Eastern business. The sale of the Walker Bros, crop of 88 bales at Independence was announced yes terday, but the name of the purchaser or the price was not learned. Fred Hurner, of Carlton, sold 7S bales at l cents, in Wells lot of 62 bales at Independence was also reported sold. The Martin Adams Es tate, of Sllverton, sold ISO bales of 1909s . and 160 bales of 1906s. There is some Improvement In the for eign situation, according; to the latest Kent' . lsh Observer, which says: The exceedingly disappointing check In the trade which so suddenly occurred -durln: the Brewers Exhibition week, and which, owing to some little Impatience on the part of many growers who like to sell their hops before this date, has been followed by a considerable slump In the qubtatlons (more especially for medium qualities). Is now giving place to a Quiet renewal or activity, and during the last week a very consider able clearance has been made, and a nura ber of Gold in g growths have changed hands. but at prices which are disappointing in the extreme. Had there been no fall in prices It Is probable that far more hops would have already been sold, for as Is alwaye the case, a fall in prices always haa the ef feet of causing brewers to slow down sa regards purchase. "It Is. however, gratifying to report that there Is more business doing, and that, in several Instances, where previous bids had been refused, a few shillings per cwt. more money has been conceded by buyers during the last few days, and a more optimistic feeling is beginning to assert itself. Two years since a quiet time occurred similar to the one through which the market is now passing, and this was followed by brisk business and a very substantial rise in prices. The present position certainly more than justifies a big recovery from the present depressed prices. Most of the choicest Gold lngs are out of growers hands, and the sup ply of Fuggles is in- very narrow compass Indeed; and a substantial rise In prices of these hops must follow any renewal of the demand. "We hear rumors of a great deal of "black blight in many of the samples from the Pacific Coast, and if It Is true that these hops contain a lot of blight, we can scarcely credit that brewers will use any unwashed and. unclean hops that may ba offered from - that quarter while good clean English hops are available. fOIAIJ DEMAM) FROM CALIFORNIA Trading la the Wheat Market Is Ught at Unchanged .Prices. .There baa been no gain in activity in the wheat market this week. The only demand Is from California, and It Is limited. Of . ferlngs at the same time are small. Forty fold was bought yesterday at 78 cents and club at 77 cents. The market was unesttled and at times showed the effect of pronounced pressure In various parts of the list. It was evident that traders were still no- decided as to the effects of the Harrlman merger decision. ' Apprehensions on this score were due largely to the possible effect of the court's attitude upon a large class of corporations which might come within the scope or this interpretation of -tne enerman anti-trust law. - Shares of the United States Steel Cor poration, whose dissolution the Government seeks, were offered more freely than for some time and declined 2V. to70'.. the lowest price since July. , Southern pacific made a show of strength at the opening, but soon lost its two-point gain. Union Pacific was asaln heavy. Losses of 1 to 4 points were scattered well tnrougn tne list ot railroads ana mauscnaii, with especial heaviness in the coper and steel issues and some of the specialties. There were indications that a sizable short interest was in Drocess of formation. Among the specialties. American Can stocks broke sharply on the declaration of 1 per cent dividend on the preferred and of an additional 14 of 1 per cent accumu lated back dividend, the explanation being given that a larger back payment had been expected, massing or tne quarterly aiviuenu of Union Bag preferred cost that stock 6 -ft nolnta.
