Further clearing of the European war clouds was an Important factor, the initial rise of one to two ooints being a natural sequence of the strong London market, de spite increasing firmness In mortey and dis counts at that .center. Both I Paris and Berlin displayed renewed strength and those markets, with London, were buyers here to the extent of probably 25,000 shares on balance. Some surprise was expressed In local banking circles at the rise in the German bank rate from 5 to 6 per cent, making the second advance in less than a month and to the highest figure quoted by. that instltu tion since January of 1008. Private cables from London and Pans suggested resumption of copper buying ier European consumers, which probably ac counted in largo measure for the strength of those shares. The baying flurry In the hop market seems to have come to an end temporarily. No purchases of cheap hops were reported 1 25 lbs. yesterday, and most of the dealers were without orders. The reason given for the subsidence of the demand was the fact that buying has recently been too easy. According to a report from North Taklma, Bob Llvniey bought 10 bales there at 20 H cents. This is said to be the laat fine lot of Taklmas left. The price shows a very stesdy market for this quality. Consul H. A. Johnson, at Ghent, writing on October 19. said of the Belgian crop: "Highly encouraging reports are received from the hop growers in the district or Alost. and. owing largely to the stable eon dltions prevailing In the German markets, the situation has decidedly Improved In this region during the past few days. Prices quoted for Belgian hope show an advance of 10 to 15 franca per 60 kilos (l.t3 to $2.90 per 110 pounds). Offers are received at 97.50 franca tls.S0). and while sellers are demanding 100 francs ($19.30. as yet no Important transactions have bean registered. There were but eight votes cast four for Wilson, two for Taft and two for Debsi which left nothing over for the big Bull Moose. In the county ticket all voted straight Ue- puMloan with one exception, who snatched his ticket and voted for the Democratic candidate for Sheriff. In the local option contest there were seven who voted wet. and one dry. Mr. Lange accuses Mrs. Lange of voting the one dry ballot, but says she is keeping mum and refuses to commit herself. S.S.
