Among Other Advantages Pointed Oat by Northslder Is Cut-Off Toward Vancouver. A ship canal connecting the Colum bia and tbe Willamette Rivers through the upper portion of the Peninsula, using perhaps Sullivan's Gulch, Is a project proposed by J. H. Noita. presi dent of the North Portland Commercial Club and father of the Interstate bridge and the matter will be presented next Thursday nlKht at a joint meeting of the North Portland Commercial Club and the Women's Auxiliary, In the Fire Hall on Albina avenue. Mr. Kolta has had the canal project in mind for some time and has given it some con sideration. At this meeting the matter of resubmitting a par.K bond Issue to the people will be considered also and the construction of a boulevard east ward from Columbia boulevard into Eastern Oregon. . "This canal proposition." said Mr. N'olta yesterday, "is no wildcat Im practicable scheme. Other cities have built canals under much greater dif flcultlea. It Is IS miles to Vancouver around by the mouth of the Willamette River. A canal couia De cut in sucn m wit as to use Sullivan's Gulch, which evtdently was once a channel or part of the Columbia River, to shorten the dis tance and give close connection with the Columbia River. It is now time to .rtRHMr this matter. "In the matter of another park bond Issue question." continued Mr. Nolta. I think the people will vote 11.000,000 if it Is submitted in the right way, ana then if used as the people desire, there win be no trouble to get anotner i. not) 000. or whatever is wanted for parks. But It no use to submit a park bond issue to the people and keep them In the dark as to what is to be done with the money. Tha 12.000,000 bond issue proposed at the November elec tion might hav carried, but the Park Board did not take the people into Its confidence. Speakers were asked on nearly every occasion what the $2. 000.000 was for and where It was to be used, but no satisfactory answer was given. The people of Vernon held a meeting to get a park for that neigh borhood, and Mr. Mische, one of the speakers, was asked If Vernon would get a park, but he did not give them a direct answer. I don't think the Ross Island proposition will every carry, and that It will be waste of time to bring it up again. It helped carry down the park bonds and the other bond Issues. "I have been asked to attend a meet ing Monday noon at the Commercial Club to consider another park bond Is sue and I expect to go, but my present opinion is the people will vote 11,000,000 for parks If they know what Is to be done with the money, but not otherwise.". FATHER ANDJSUITOR FIGHT O. B. llog Objects to G. H. Weise's Calls on laughter. Father and suitor almost came to blows In Municipal Court yesterday when O. B. Hog, altr prosecuting a case of trespass against G. H. Welse. started to lead his daughter, the cause of contention, from the courtroom, and Welse essayed the same service on the nthor side. The father, although much the- smaller and older man, sprang at Welse, and the two men were separat ed by Bailiff Johnson. Hog testified that he had given fre quent orders to Welse to stay away from the premises at 630 Overton street. The daughter followed on the stand, but denied that ber sweetheart ever had been ordered away. "Don't lie. daughter," cautioned Hog, who was prosecuting his own esse. "Has he told you to tell UesT' he continued. "Speak, child; it is ' your father talking to you; tell the truth." The girl falterlngly admitted that she had beard ber father threaten Welse with the police, and the court found him guilty. A sentence of 30 days was suspended on condition that he remain away -from tha Hog home. CAIVIN HEILIG AND H, L. KEATS ARE SOREIY TRIED. Attempt or Theatrical Magnate to Carry Auto Dealer Through Water Is Disastrous. If certain Portland people, among them Calvin Heilig and H. I Keats, enjoyed some nice duck for ' dinner Monday night It was not without pre vious effort and Inconvenience. Both Mr. Heilig and Mr. Keats like duck. Also, they like the sport of shoot ing them. Knowing of their tastes and ambitions, the entire membership of the Crescent Outing Club, consisting of Julius ti. Meier, M. C. Dickin son and Charles Wright. Invited the aforesaid sportsmen out for a Sunday's sport. Now the club mem bers are accustomed to almost any kind of outdoor conditions and were prepared for emergencies. Besides, It had been raining. Arriving at Sauvies Island, where the shooting "grounds" of the club are it was "every man look out for his own ducks." That's bow it was that the guests of the club, namely, Mr. Heilig and Mr. Keats, paid for their ducks so dearly. Being somewhat unfamiliar with the territory on Duck Island the two visi tors did not like the idea of everyone shifting for himself, especially since Mr. Keats had on a pair of boots that reached only to his knees. The water was high. To reach the blind from which he waa to do his shooting Mr. Keats must necessarily wade IS feet through the water that threatened to flow into his boot tops. "Wait a minute, old top," shouted the theatrical magnate as he espied the au tomobile man starting out through the perilous water, "I'll carry you across." Mr. Heilig had on a pair of those regulation hip boots without which no duck hunting expedition can be suc- cessxui. . . . , . -1 1 1 Tr.at. In ncKin up me struggling .o... .... his arms pretty much in the same way as aoes tne singe neru me miw...o heroine, Mr. Heilig started dramatically toward the blind. Now Mr. Heilig is nothing If he Is not careful, and he exercised both care and caution. Suddenly be bumped his right foot against a submerged rock and both men went sprawling Into the water. They got wet up to their necks. After drying their clothing the un fortunate pair yet had time to Indulge , - 111. , 1 1 aVn1m w I Q f in ttlA in lltLlO tcweiu ' " afternoon.
