21 TIIE. MORXING OREGONIAX, WEDNESDAY. OCTOBER 23, 1912. E Active Demand for the Best Grades on the Coast. OTHER KINDS ALSO FIRMER Prices Locally Are Fully Two Cents Higher AH Around California Market Strong With Up to 21 3-4 Cents Bid. Choice Oregon hops are passing out of (rowers' band at a rapid rate. The up ply Is limited and sales are effected with out trouble. The demand for the lower trades la not so keen as that tor choice. but even primes and mediums are stronger than they were a short time ago. Sales are being made at 17 and 17 cents of hops of a grade that three weeks ago would not bring over IS or 14 cents. Choice hops are firm at 20 cents. Klaber, Wolf ft Netter yesterday bought about ISO bales at this figure. Whitman Shorten paid Uty cents for the Johnson lot of 100 bales at Aurora. Other business was done within the range of 18 H to JO cents. The California market is strong and work ing upward. The strength there Is very likely to affect values In this state In the near future. As high as 21 cents was bid yesterday for special lots in the Men docino section. No European cables came through. NO FOKEIGX DEMAND FOB WHEAT 'Cargoes Cannot Be Sold Abroad, Though Markets There Are Steadier. Continued quietness prevails In the wheat market. The undertone of the market Is about steady, but most of the dealers do not quote over 77 cents for club or 81 cents for bluest em. The Liverpool market,- -ac- eordlng to cables, was In good shape, and Chicago closed steady to firm. The for eigners, however, would not buy cargoes. With no European demand for wheat and the Oriental flour demand almost flat, deal ers regarded the situation as pointing to lower prices. Foreign conditions are such, however, that the wheat trade situation Inay any time change over night. The at titude of farmers in the Northwest is not the same as in former years. Heretofore. they were generally ready to sell on de clines, but this year price reductions only top the selling movement, and when any wheat is let go it is only on advances and not much then. la the coarse cereals conditions were as formerly, with a firm underlying feeling, and only small lots changing hands. Liocal receipts in cars were reported by the Merchants Exchange as follows; , Wheat Barley Flour data Hay Monday ....... 202 19 14 Tuesday ,. 77 12 12 11 6 Tear ago S3 2 S 7 Vason to date. .6332 f7S 727 623 427 Tear ago 461 212 484 454 D24 Foreign crop conditions are summarised by the Liverpool Corn Trade News as fol lews: United Kingdom The condition of the wheat has Improved, owing to the dry leather which has prevailed for the past w eek. ' The sowing of the new crop Is pro gressing lavoraoiy. France The outlook for the seedlngs Is ravorsble. although some rain would be de sirable.. Supplies of native wheat from the interior have increased, for which there, is a good demand. Germany The sowing of rye la finished. but wheat sowing is backward. Supplies of -wneat are only moderate, with some of the arrivals showing very poor condition. Sup Tiles of oats are scarce. The weather is favorable. - Hungary According "to an official report the weather has been unfavorable for the . plowing for the new wheat crop, and also for the growth of the corn and potato crop, bat recent estimates are being maintained. Roumanla The weather is rainy, which Is unfavorable for the corn crop. Stocks of wheat are Increasing. Russia The outlook - for the seedlngs Is favorable. Arrivals are variable, with stocks increasing. Australia Present Indications point to a recorQ crop. Argentina According to present reports, the outlook for the wheat crop Is favorable. India The outlook for the seeding Is eansraciory. uia wneat is being freely of fered. FRUIT TRADE AFFECTED BT WEATHER Grapes Still the Firm Feature Only Cheap Apples Wanted. The inclement weather has at last af fected the fruit demand and trading yes terday was rather light. Grapes continue the firmest feature. An other car of Tokays arrived from Cali fornia yesterday, . and sold at the former firm prices, no Oregon grapes or peaohes were reported in. There was but little demand for apples except the cheaper grades. Most retailera want stock that they can sell at 81 or less. A car of California tomatoes was received and quoted firm at 75 cents. California shippers are offering head lettuce in car lots, but local dealers consider the season too early yet. Celery is clearing up better without Improvement In price. Poultry Prices Are Improving. The poultry market la improving slowly under moderate receipts and better buy ing. Hens sold yesterday at 14 1414 cents and Springs brought the same price. Other kinds were in fair demand. Dressed meats are still qulat and inclined to be weak.. The egg market was firm at 40 centa for fresh Oregona. No. 1 Eastern -Aprils were quoted at 85 cents. The dairy produce markets were without , change. ' Bean Acreage la Small. Stockton advices by mall say that the bean acreage ia very small, but the yield ia a very good one. "Were it not for a large carryover from last year's crop there would probably be a scarcity of beans, as this season's crop is only about 60 per cent of the total yield In this country in 1811," says the Stockton report, "Pink, blackeye and white beans are being threshed and al though they will not be fully matured for two or three weeks yet they are in good condition for the trade." Seeking Market for Alfalfa Seed. VALE. Or.. Oct. 22. (Special.) Farmers In the Malheur Valley have begun to won der whether they are to find a market for their alfalfa seed, which, has been harvested for some time. Last year at this time there were many inquiries from seed buy ers all over the Northwest, and there waa ready sale for more seed than the farmers had. This year very few sales have been made, and the demand seema to be dis couraging. There Is considerable seed in the Valley. Bank Clearings. The several lots of cattle dis posed of went at usual prices, quality con sidered. Hogs brought $8.65, The Livestock Reporter says of conditions In the hog market: "The strong markets in the Middle west have made it Impossible for Coast packers to Import swine supplies and as there are 60 per tent more home-grown hogs available this year than last, conditions have worked out Just right for the selling end. Ordi narily a pork deluge such as that of the lust six weeks would have caused a panic in prices, but there never has been a time when the hog market was In great danger of breaking. LONDON IS AGAIN A BUYER With Subsidence of Trading tnto la the Iay, Early Gains Are large ly Lost Sub-Treasury Draws Heavily on Banks. NEW YORK, Oct- 88. War In the Balkans was again a paramount influence In thi stock market today. There was an ab sence, however, of yesterday's heavy liqui dation for foreign account. Indeed, Lon don bought moderately here of United States Steel, Amalgamated Copper and other spe cialties. AH European markets continued to mani' fest uneasiness, London taking more stocks from Paris and Berlin. The latter exchanges were weak, Canadian Pacific declining I points In Berlin on what appears to b urgent selling. The opening here displayed some irregu larity, followed by general Improvement, and by midday some substantial gains were reoorded, chiefly In the coalers, union fa clflc Steel and Amalgamated Copper. In the latter part of the session trading feu away until it failed to possess any sig nificance, the only feature being the actlv ity In Chlno Copper at a new high record. Towards the end prices fell steadily until little remained of the early gains. Union Pacific and Lehigh Valley being especially heavy. Call loans opened at S per cent and the creator part of the day s offerings were at that figure.
