21 THE MORNING OREGOXIAN, FRIDAY, OCTOBER 18, 1913. MORE TRADE IN HOPS Buying in Coast Markets Is on Larger Scale. TWENTY s CENTS IS PAID Keren! lots Taken In Oreexra at That Plfnre Dealers Turning Their Attention to California. English Growers Firm. There more general buying In the Pacific Coast hoD market yesterday. Trad lnr in thl tat woe on a fairly active cale at IT to 20 cents. Oregon grower are maintaining a firm attitude and are not pressing their hops on the market. An encouraging feature of the situation la that a number of buyer are now out seeking for hope, whereas last week only one or two firms were operating. The Bob Ankeny lot of about 100 bales. at Rlckreall, was sold yeeterday to William Brown Co. at 20 cents. Stlaber, Wolf Netter bought two carloads at 10 cents and commissions. The California market was more active than it has been recently. Dealers, un able to buy in Oregon beoause of the high prices asked by the growers here, have turned their attention to the southern state, where they were bidding up to IB cents yesterday. The foreign hop markets continue firm but quiet. English growers are holding out stiffly for 110 to 120 shillings. HOP TRADES d THE AURORA SECTION Recent Purchases Made a 1 to 17 Cent and Better. AURORA. Or., Oct. IT. BpeclaL) Sev eral small lots of hops were purchased here yesterday. Among them were the follow ing! Mlshler A Grlbble bought 16 bales from Krays A Blebert at 14 cents; 23 bales from Coyle, at St. Paul, at IT cents; 45 bales from 8. J. McDonald, Joe HUler and J. L. Cook, at St. Paul, at 1 and IS cents. H. I Bents bought from B. J. Grimm T3 bales at a price not given out. but which is probably 19 cents; 15 bales over oon tract from Chris Trost. at 18 cental 12 bales from J. H. Sanguineus, of Hubbard, at an un known price; 89 bales at Banks and 111 bales at Eugene at 13 H centa; 79 bales from George Oglesby, of Aurora, at a price not made public, but as the lot Is reputed to be the finest lot In this section, the price waa probably IT cents or better. The Oeorge Gates lot of 52 bales was sold Monday to Klaber, Wolf A Ketter at 16 H cent. Many lots have been taken in en contracts, which speaks well for the qual ity of the1 hops produced here. The Southern Pacific warehouse la fast filling up with hops that are being put In storage by growers who Intend to bold for an advance In price. OREGON WOOL SALES LX THE EAST Dealers Look for Hlsher Rather Than Lower Prices Soon. Transactions in the Boston wool market In the past week, according to mall ad vices. Included about 1,000,000 pounds of original bag wool from Oregon, Soda Springs, Montana, Utah and New Mexico. These wools show no change In prices from the sales of similar wools previously made. Commenting on the situation, the Boston Commercial Bulletin says; "There Is ssld to be more of s tendency en the part of mills to taks on wool again, the reasoning of buyers apparently being that wools are unlikely to be lower after elec tion, and. In view of the tremendous short age In supplies throughout the world as well as In this country, are very likely to be higher. "Thers Is no weak feature In the goods market. The leading factor In the market Is understood to be practically sold up on men's fancy worsteds. - The situation on staple goods Is too well known to need com ment, while the drees goods mills are very apparently well supplied with orders, espe dally for good running to medium woolA "Worsted yarn spinners are refusing to make quotations very far ahead and Indeed It la said that a number of them have re fused to make quotations for future delivery until after election, except at material ad vances. "There is a belief among many of the dealers that the mills ss a whole are less well covered on raw material than Is patent on the surface. DEMAND FOR WHEAT NOT PRESSING Deader Reduce Bids, But Offering, by Fanners Are Light. While the" undertone! of the whest mar ket continues generally steady, dealers were not Inclined yesterday to quote up to for mer prices. For club 78 cents was offered and tor bluestem 81 cents. Trading was limited, principally because of the light ness of farmers' offerings. The foreign and Eastern markets closed steady, but dealers believe there will be an advance today. Local receipts, in cars, were reported by the Merchants Exchange as follows: . . Wheat Barley Flour Oats Hay Monday 1T7 21 2 24 15 Tuesday 170 8 6 10 ' 8 Wednesday ... 68 8 8 2 IS Thursday 75 8 5 6 16 Tear ago 4 . . 6 8 11 Bcuon to date.6R2 722 680 498 80 Year ago 4287 202 637 . 4-5 671 HIDE RECEIPTS LARGE, PRICES FIRM Dealer Expect Market to Work Backward Before Long;. The hide market continues ss firm as ever with dealers paying up to IS and 1SH cents. Local receipts are larger, but values are fully maintained in view of the strength East. The present prices are likely to hold for at least another month. Decem ber hides will be poorer In quality and It may be that prices will recede then, but of this no one Is certain. Tanners are carrying small leather stocks at the present high, prices, which would seem to Indicate -that they are afraid the mar ket cannot hold long. Should there be a serious European war,' however, there will be no backset to the advance, but on the contrary probably a further rise. CHEESE WILL BE. HIGHER NEXT WEEK Local Prices Will Be Advanced Half a Cent All Around. The cheese market la well cleaned up and very firm. On the arrival of the next boat from Tillamook early next week prices will be advanced half a cent all around. Butler was steady and unchanged In prit There was a good demand for chlcker. receipts of which were moderate. The besL liens sold at 14 cents. Springs were un changed. Trade in the dressed meat market dragged nd prices were Inclined to be weak. The ( egg market was firm at the old price. Southern Oregon Peaches Received. Another large shipment of Southern Ore gon Salway peaches was received yester day. The fruit waa mostly of small sixe and was quoted st 40&S cents a box. drapes of all kinds sold, readily. COPPER IS AM EXCEPTION Amalgamated Dividend Is Raised1 to Six Per Cent Other Iading Is " sries Tending Downward For eign Discount Advance. NEW YORK. Oct. 17. Foreign conditions were again factors of primary Importance In the local stock market today. Formal declaration of war by Turkey against Bui garla and Servla called renewed attention to the tense situation in Eastern Europe, and advancea in the British and French discount rates served as reminders of Im pending as well as current events at Im portant Continental centers. Of Europe's three leading flnanolal In stitutions, the statement of the Imperial Bank of Germany was far and away the most favorable, disclosing large gains In gold and cash, with a decided contraction of discounts. The British bank lost more gold, its liability reserves are muoh under last year's and the 0 per cent discount Is th highest In aoout two years. The Bank of France also lost some gold and Increased Its discounts by over tS7.000.00O. Firmness nrevalled on the Paris Bourse, while Berlin was reactionary by reason of the Balkan troublea Money was dear In London, as a result of the bank rate, and our securities eviuencea Inclination to sag. Later, London turned a moderate buver In thle market, again tax ing Amalgamated Copper and United State Steel. . Amals-amatad Conner was the foremost feature of this market, surpassing all other favorites as to activity ana wiutn ot move ment. Shortly before the close, announce ment of the Increase in the dividend from 4 per cent to 6 per cent became known, but the stock failed to equal the figures of the morning, while the rest of the list lost none of its early heaviness.
