THE MORXISG OREGON IAN, SATURDAY, OCTOBER 12, 1913. 17 GIGE HOPS FIB Dealers Trying to Secure the Best Qualities. RIGGS LOT BRINGS 19 CENTS Low Grades Are Almost Neglected on the Coast and Will Be Until the Top Grades' Have Been i Disposed Of. T. A. Rlggs, of Blckreal, yesterday sold 296 bales of bopa to Willi am Brown ft Company, of Salem, at 19 cents. This trans, action, one of the moat Important of "-the season to data, shows the strength of the market. There Im a fair amount of business under way In the market, but the demand, so far as the Portland dealers are concerned. Is almost wholly for choice grades. Hops of this-kind are being- offered sparingly, as most growers have their Ideas above; the current market level. Choice hops are quotable locally at IS to 10 cents, and It Is believed. If the. right kind of a lot was offered, that 20 cent could be obtained from dealers who have made sales of strictly choice hops. The undertone of the market Is healthy. Prices are firm on the Coast. In the East and m Europe, which occasions some sur prise, with the large crops harvested. The growers, by their attitude, are largely re sponsible for this position. The demand Is not yet general and the market cannot be called a broad one, but Its course so far has been satisfactory and there Is every reason to believe it will con tinue so. Low grade hops, however, and there are plenty of them, will have to sell tn the early market at considerable dis count. Hop Bale, In Aurora Section. AURORA, Oct. 11. (Special.) Several lots of hop, are on storage at the Southern Pacific warehouse here. The capacity of the warehouse Is about 1500 bales. There seems to be no great activity In the mar ket here and doubtless many hops will be stored. Ous Arndt, who has the railroad warehouse under lease, expects there will be a "full house" In a few days. A few sales have been made this week. Among those reported are the following: I "W. Durant. 84 bales, to Whitman & Short- ell, of Woodburn, at 17 cents; A. C. Nelson. 88 Dales, to Whitman at Shorten; John Miley, F9 biles; Charles Gellbrlch, SO bales; Wil liam Bents, Sr., 41 bales; John Heins. SS bales; all sold to Mlshler & Grlbble, at prices from 15 to 1ft cents. A small lot at St. Paul was sold to Cat lln A; Linn at 16 cents. F. Isaacson today bought the Thomas Kerr lot at SV Paul, Si bales, at 15 cents. The Ellason brothers have Just sold their SO-bale lot to Mlshler & Grlbble at 14 cents. FARMERS DISPOSED TO HOLD WHEAT Bids at Current Price Are Not Attractive to Sellers. Bids of 77 cents for club wheat were freely 'made yesterday and some dealers ' tried to buy for a cent less, but sellers were not In a mood to consider such prlcea The further advances In the foreign and Eastern markets added to the strength of holders here. The demand was largely from California and for held wheat. Ex porters were not active, nor were millers. Weekly foreign wheat shipments were as follows: This - Last week. week. Bushels. Bushels. Shipments of Muscat grapes were : eelved from The Dalles yesterday and, as the quality was good, they sold readily at 90 cents a crate. California Tokays were firm at 90 cents to 11. Concords offered at 10 cents a basket, but were hard to move. In the apple market the demand was only for stock of good color and uniform pack. Low grade apples are plentiful and are difficult to sell. A car of fancy Kings was received from Corvallls and put on sale at $11.25, according to grade and six. Several shipments of Salway peaches have been received from The Dalles that show absolutely no color. The demand even for choice peaches Is small. A car of Jersey cranberries arrived. Poultry receipts were very small yes terday and the market was quoted steadier arM about half a cent higher on chicken. Receipts of dressed meats were also light and price were steady. . Eggs continue the firm feature of the market, with arrivals very small and the demand good. Cheese is closely sold up. The market is firm, with an upward tendency. Butter continues firm. Dun ft Cos weekly review of trade tomorrow will say: In every section and In every branch of trade activity in production and distribu tion prevails. It is notaDle that in tne principal trades and especially in -iron and steel actual buoyancy appears, and the de mand is so keen that it tests the capacity of nroductlve and transDortlng facilities. Shortage of car, and labor, and In soma cases shortage of plant capacity are the most embarasslng problems confronting business men. , Conditions In the dry goods trade, both present and prospeotlv, are satisfactory. A good Fall business is reported in primary and secondary channels. All varieties of leather oontlnue firm and active. The hid. markets are again more active, especially packer varieties, and sales of these aggregate fully 100,000 for the week. TRADE IS BETTER THAN FOR TEARS In Various Line Unprecedented Sales Are Reported. NEW ' TORE; Oct. IL Bradstraets to. morrow will say: 4 Trad, movements continue at a fairly rapid pace. Jobbers and manufacturers In most parts of the country are enjoying more business than has been known In years; various lines report unprecedented sales, and shipping departments in tne prin clpal centers are being rushed in order to oooe with demands for deliveries. The most significant features of the en tire situation are the apparent disregard shown for political-developments, the heavy consumption of all kinds of goods, the scarcity of stocks in first hands and the well sold ahead condition of textile mills. EUROPE SELLS STOCKS LIQUIDATION OWING TO WAR OUTLOOK IS HEAVY. Canadian Pacific Suffers Most in the New York Market, Declining Over Ten Points. -NEW YORK, Oct 11. The foreign situa tion loomed larger on the local financial horizon today. Overnight news from Lon don and other European points was largely of an alarming tenor, and these advices were followed by enormous sales of Amer ican stocks in London, Paris and Berlin. The German and French capitals were centers of demoralisation, ana Lonaon, as uauui. had to bear the brunt of thelr..heavy out pouring. Sales for European account were estimated at 100.000 shares. Canadian Pacific was the storm center of the market, deollnlng 8 points in Ber lin, closing with half that loss In London and opening here with a decline of practi cally five points. From this level It made some recovery, only to sell lower with the balance of the market in the late afternoon and closing with a net loss of 10 points. Union Pacific was weakest of the leaders, but the Hill Issues, grangers. United States Steel and coppers were only slightly less affected, the range of losses In some of these Issues approximating three points In the last hour. Towards the close. Union Pacific, coppers. Steel and a few other active is sues were again urgently offered at further declines. Local traders evinced no disposition to cover contracts, basing their operations on the belief that tomorrow's holiday here adds to the critical stats of the market condi tions abroad.
