21 THE. MORNING OREGOJiTAN. FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 1912. COFFEE fiVIHG UP Frost Scare Being Used Now to Elevate Prices. MANIPULATION OF MARKET Brazilian and ew York Bulls Have Ka i --J Va 1 ues a Cent and a - Quarter a Pon nd in the Past Six Weeks. Th coffee market continues to advance, the frost scare being use a to push up prices. Ofclegrams received yesterday from Brazil reported that plantation experts state that the trees are becoming dally worse; that there Is no sign of Improvement; that the damage Is not yet calculable, and the likelihood is that It Is large. From present expectations the 1918 crop will be even smaller than this year's crop, and that was so small that on the strength of Its size prices war very considerably shoved up at this time last year and have been well main talned at the high point right along. The senders of these telegrams are con nected with the syndicate which floated the valorisation loan, and although the frost reports have been confirmed by Government authorities, it must be borne In mind that tbos sending the telegrams are deeply In terested financially In holding up the prices of coffee and for that reason the frost scare Is not given as much credence as if there were no manipulation. These state ments concerning the market are given as they come through the regular sources. It can be said without question that by reason of the late developments, coffees have been shoved up fully H4o per pound in the last six weeks and also that the market Is ex tremely firm at the advance. If the results of the frost prove as se rious as claimed by those sending the re ports, then for a certainty very much higher coffee prices can be looked for even than now prevail. If, however, the weather should prove so favorable that the damage will be to an extent repaired, then there Is likely to be a recession In prices. Just now, certainly, there la no question what ever about the extreme firmness of the market. DEAL IN HOPS NINETEEN - CENT New York Market I One Cent' Higher English Acreage Figure. If there was much business put through In the Oregon hop market yesterday It was not known in the local offices. The deal reported was the sale of the John Morrison lot at Independence to T. A. Llvesley A Co.. at 19 centa Since the first of the week It Is est! mated that about 2000 bales of all grades have changed hands. The principal buyers have been Klaber. Wolf A Natter. T. LIvesley & Co.. Louis Lachmund and Wil Ham Brown & Co. New York wires received yesterday re ported the state market 1 cent higher at 2S cents. A London cable estimated tin English crop at 350.000 cwt Details of the English government's hop acreage report were received yesterday. They show the acreage by counties in the past three years to. be as follows: 1912 Acres. be Eastern eggs. These eggs were bought by the shipper from a storekeeper in that town, who had undoubtedly purchased them in this city at the lower prices at which Eastern eggs are sold. This has of late become a practice with some of the produce dealers in the valley towns and the Front- street merchants are determined to put a stop to It. It is bad enough to receive held eggs of Oregon make, without having Eastern stock shipped back here as the home article. The poultry market cleaned up well yes terday. Hens and Springs for the most part sold at 14 cents, but some dealers shaded this price later In the day. Toung turkeys sold at 22 cents. Dressed meats were unchanged. Cheese supplies were light and the mar ket waa arm. Butter was also firm. EARLY GAINS LOST S Tokays Come in Better Order. The fruit trade was fairly active. Peaches continued in light supply and firm. A car of Yakima freestones Is due today. Among the grape receipts was a car of California Tokays In crates, which were In good order and sold at 90 cents. Concords were not very plentiful and cleaned np at 164 17 cents a basket. Good shipping tomatoes were scarce and firmer at 00 cents. 54?Gt. per cent: ruling rate. 45: oloe- hlA. Ski offered at 6. Shippers would buy at 77 cents, which is figured to be full export value, out mere are no sellers at this price, and few at 78 cents. A premium has teen paid In some sections for choice lots wanted by millers on account of their especial fitness for milling ' purposes, and these higher prices paid have tended to keep up farmers- ideas, ino raci, also, that most growers are financially able to hold tends to keep down the activity of the market. The recent decline In flour prices has checked some of the buying by millers. Bluestem was quoted yesterday at m cents and forty-fold at 79 cents. Th. oats and barley markets were quiet. For October oats 24.50 was bid, but sellers held back. The recent free buying ol ieea barley has been followed by a pause In that line, and lower prices are offered. Local receipts. Wheat prices became heavy today under selling due to clearing weather conditions Northwest, poor cash demand and depressing cables. News that threshers had been able to re sume work in North Dakota gave courage to the bears in wheat. Winnipeg sent word today that receipts were expected to in crease forthwith. Larger and cheaper of ferings of Russian and Canadian wheat were regarded here as chiefly responsible for the backset In European quotations. Favor able crop reports from Argentina counted also against the bulls. Corn weakness, too, added to the overweight on the market. Frosts failed to stimulate any Important buying of corn. The rate committee of the Chamber of Commerce has decided to file a suit at once before the Interstate Com merce Commission asking- that Astoria be granted the same freight rates as are accorded I'ueet bound points on grain from the interior and also that it be given the common distributing rates. The committee had sent cotn- unicatlons to the presidents of all the Hill and Harriman lines in the Northwest, demanding these rates. Answers were received to a few ol the communications, but they were un satisfactory, merely acknowledging re ceipt of the letters and stating that the matter bad been referred to var ious other officers of the respective roads, "who would reply in flue time." Becoming disgusted at this delay, the committee determined to wait no long er, so it has engaged attorneys and a meeting of business men and prop erty owners has been called for next Friday evening for tne purpose or ar ranging the finances for carrying out the suit. Word has been received that the local Interests will have the sup port of the Farmers' National Union in making the fight for lower freight rates.
