THE MORNING OREGOXIAJf. - FRIDAY. JUNE 28, 1913. ' HIDE MARKET DOWN Prices Off a Quarter From the Best Quotation. QUALITY IS RESPONSIBLE Too Much Long-Haired Slock Held by Dealers tower Tendency in the Eastern Hide Centers. Foreign Markets Are Quiet, The lral hide market has touched the high point, at least for the early Summer, and Is now off a quarter rent from the bent figure recently quoted. At the 11 cnt basis, dealers are operating cautiously. The trouble appears to be with the quality -t most of the offerings. Too many long haired hides are evldentlv held by the dealers, as tannera have restricted their burins; and are very careful about what they take. In the trade tne opinion prevails that hide prices will sag farther. Calf skins are also weaker by half a rent, with 20 cents now the. top price quoted. Pelts, on the other hand, continue firm. Influenced by the strength of the nol market. Hide market conditions In the East are ilrsrrHied In the latest mall reports as fol Intvs: "Packer hides are in less demand and the market Is quiet. In country hides Trices cover a range of about 1 cent, ac-r-trdlng to quality, length of hair and per centage of grubs, etc. Rome all-long and mcdlurr.-hfilred buffs are obtainable down to 1.lr. and lots containing about 25 per cent short hair at 13 '4 c which prices are lower than formerly ruled for similar stork, but buffs running 50 per cent short-haired bring 13 Vic. and several sales of 75 per cent snori haired were made at l.tttc and all short- haired up to 14c On extremes prices range the same way from 14c to 1.1c. The European markets are rather quiet, but mostly unchanged. River Plate dry hides are quoted at various prices, and some very high rates are talked on these, but with few actual sales effected In this mar ket: conditions are mixed and hard to quote. Common descriptions of Latin American dry hides have recovered the half, cent decline recently secured by tannera Calfskins are still easy and further de clines have occurred both east and. west. Horse hides have also weakened, with prices off from 10c to ISc apiece from previous top rates. . INCREASE IN THE HOP ACREAGE PepsHmnit of Agriculture Fall mate It at S300 on Pacific Coast. Correspondents of the Department of Ag riculture estimate the increased hop acreage In Oregon. Washington and California at S.tfK arrea The Dally Consular and Trade Reports spya: According to the United States census, the area planted to hops in New York state was 27.532 acres In 1S99 and 12.023 acres in lttoo. In Washington the figures for the same years were 5296 and 2433. respectively. In Oregon the acreage increased from 15.433 In 18!l to 21.770 In 1909. and In California from !0 to 8391 In the same period. In Austria-Hungary the area de voted to hop raising baa fallen from 6.1.S02 acres- in inns to M. flirt acres In 1011: In Germany It dropped from RS.iWM acres to 6VP45 acres In the aame time, and In Eng land from SS.921 acres to 83.05 acres. The yield per acre has also declined In those countries. American growers of hops are finding an Increasing foreign demand, the exports for the past three calendar years having been as follows: Average per Tear. pounds. 10! S.95.V5.-.3 111)0 12.748.017 i:m 14.104.404 Value. t. 4-J1.0O" 2. Son, 705 4.25S.431 pound. 10.16 .IS .80 "True, back in 19P7 the exports were OO0.0J9 pounds, but they realized only 12. S02.fi4r, or 17 cents per pound, and exports In 19oft were 2l.423.8H9 pounds, valued at $2,455,410. or 11 cents per pound. . MOHAIR MARKET IS VXTXT E RESTING Venal Summer Activity Fall to Appear In the East. Mohair market conditions In the East and abroad are reported by the Boston Com mercial Bulletin as follows: "There Is nothing new to relate with reference to the local mohair market. Some few consigned lots are available In this market and are being moved slowly at un changed rates but otherwise the market Is dull and uninteresting. Reports from the English and Conti nental markets also Indicate very slow mar kets. The spinners of yarns state that there Is practically nothing In the way of export order and home trade Is likewise dulL The lightweight season may bring forth some orders but as yet no signs of it are In the air. v ama ' ."Nothing la hoard from the , Cape. Eng lish and American buyers are said- to have been In the Turkish market and some sales are reported prices having been shaded doubtless to Induce purchases. A prominent American buyer is understood to have been in the market as well as a prominent Hradford importer. "Po-nestlc quotations: Fest combing. 3Sfi 39c: good combing, 34G3.V; ordinary combing. Cheese will cost more money In the local market next week, as there Is not enough coming out from Tillamook to fill orders. The butter market holds steady at the old price. Poultry receipts continue heavy and ll requires much labor on the part of dealers to keep supplies moving. Hens are taken up at steady prices, but Springs drag. Other kinds of poultry are not wanted. Egga are steady to firm and gradually ad vancing In price. The veal market Is strong, with supplies -ighter than usual. Hogs hold steady, but thould soon be affected by the bulge in prices at the yards. WHEAT TRADE OF SMALL VOLUME Only Butane Passing la for California Ac count. New York Stock Market Is Irregular and Heavy and Listless at the Close. NEW YORK. June IT. Aside from the political situation, today's happenings were viewed with complacency by that element In the stock market committed to the con structive side. The comprehensive advance In steel products by a number of Inde pendent manufacturers, and additional fa vorable crop advices were accepted as fac tors of ' importance. Fears of a money flurry here In con nection with July 1 payments proved to be unfounded, and the European monetary sit uation assumed a brighter aspect. Irregularity dominated the stock: market throughout. ' DRY WEATHER NORTHWEST Attempts of Shorts to Cover Sends Prices Skrward Unless Rain Comes Soon, Situation May Become Critical. CHICAGO. June 27. An uphesval In prices for wheat took place today as a re sult of drv weather in the Northwest. Strength developed in wheat Nas soon as shorts attempted to cover. Belief grew rapidlv that the annual scare for the Spring crop bad begun, although the bulk of evi dence from the Northwest wss that grow ing grain had not deteriorated, except In limited localities. Opinion prevailed that unless rain came soon, the situation- was critical and speculators were disposed to anticipate. Assertions that It would require excep tional weather to make corn overcome pres ent lateness of growth helped to lift the price. The line crop outlook caused oats to lag In the general advance of grain. Provisions, though negleoted. were bol stered by the up turn In neighboring pits, leading future, ranged as follows: . WHEAT. E ADDITIONAL QUARTERS NECES SARY FOR ACCOMMODATION. Theory Is Put Forward by Speaker That Government Is. Founded on Basis Giving Women Votes.' . . Increase in the number of members of the State Central Campaign Com mittee and of the College Equal Suf frage Society has been responsible for the enlargement of headquarters In the Selling building. At the weekly meeting of the former society it was decided to secure another room adjoin ing present quarters, so that commit tees would not be interrupted while in session. Two addresses were heard. One of the addresses was given by J, aL Glass, of California, who has spoken in many states on reform matters gen erally, and on suffrage in particular. J. Gashill, an attorney from Oklahoma, was the other speaker. In his address Mr. Glass said that three things were needed to carry the campaign in Oregon, co-operation, or ganization and education. I have never heard a sound, logi cal or practical argument against wo man suffrage yet," said the speaker. 'The same argument that gives man the vote also gives the ballot to wo man. Justice is - the strongest argu ment for it. and the preamble of the Constitution -guarantees the: ballot to woman." f Itrnorance of the subject was the cause assigned by J. Gashill for the failure of so many people to vote for equal suffrage. "The campaign must be conducted strenuously tnis fait lor the point to be carried now. Our Gov ernment Is founded upon a document which declared that the . governed should have the right to make the laws which govern them. That can not be true until women," who are a part of the governed, have the right to .express their opinion on the laws which affect them as much as they affect the men." Amons: the speakers lor the cause of equal franchise at the Gladstone Park Chautauqua will be ex-Senator C W. Fulton, and Rev. Luther Dyott, of the First Congregational Church. What will be the subject, el their addresses is not known, but in the course of their remarks special attention will be naid to urging the necessity of making a great fight to win out this Fall. large Family Hag Reunion.
