SUGAR PRICES LOWER AXOTIIEIl DIME IS IjOPPED OFF REF1VER3' CHARGE. Season's Total Ilrd action Xow 53 Cents Jobbers to Follow Load. War Brings About Cut. Sugar prices are tumbling rapidly. Testerday there was another decline of 10 centa a hundred In tha refinery price, making a total reduction of t5 cents from the high price that prevailed In the latter part of September. The present refinery quotation on the local rr.arkatt is 17 a hundred for granulated cane sugar and l. 80 for beet sugar. These prices. In spite of the several recent reductions, are still 11.79 a hundred above the lowest prloe of the year last February. e The refineries, however, are not do ing all the cutting. In fact the prices set by the California sugar magnates have but little to do with the selling Price of sugar In this market. One ef the Portland Jobbing firms, which, a few days ago. made a slash of 65 cents under the refinery price, has resumed tha effort to get thla commodity down to a reasonable quotation. This firm wl!l, this morning, cut its price to the retailer 10 cents a hundred, making trie prloe of cans sugar $0.26 and of boet sugar t0. less the usual cash discount. This la 7t cents a saclfless than the quotation the refineries are trying to maintain hera These cut prices are so much lower than those prevailing In 6an Fran cisco that the sugar, which was made ln California, could be shipped and sold at a profit after the freight and alt expenses wera paid. The piioe-cuttlng tbat Is going on ta this market Is due to dissension ln the Jobbing trada One or two small wholesalers have entered the field lately and some of thara assert that the older firms have been trying te make It unpleasant for them. An opportunity to Indulge ln a war for trade presented Itself when sugar prices began to re cede after reaching the highest level In a score of yeara COMMISSION PLAN BACKED Vancouver Ministers Circulate Peti tions Among Voters.
