Cave-In of earth at Union avenue and East ravis street, yesterday. cAuaed the death of Ulburo Waterford. a negro workman, and Inflicted slight Injuries upon a Greek who was work ing beside him. The two men. with others, were making the excavation for a new building when a side wall of earth toppled over and burled them. They were quickly extricated, but Waterford was so seriously affected by the shock and Internal Injuries that be died soon after reaching St. Vin cent's Hospital. The other man suf fered a sprained wrist and alight bruises. Waterford was tJ years old and lived with bis wife and one child at SIS Union avenue North. An Inquest will be held. Louis Lfchmann, biologist, delivered the sixth of his course of 10 lectures before the Oregon State Congress Of Mothers at the Young Women's Chris tian Association auditorium yesterday afternoon at 3 o'clock. The lecture dealt with the power of blood when properly nourished to resist disease and advised mothers how they should watch this particular point In the growth of their children. Lcrchen Dies as Result of Auto Crash Baby Is Low. One death, that of Mrs. W. H. Lercben, has followed the collision between an automobile and an Oregon Electric train at Hood and GIbbs streets, Monday even ing, and the baby daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. D. Maynard Is still in a precari ous condition, suffering from concussion of the brain, but hopes of her recovery are entertained. Mrs. Lerchen died at St Vincent's Hospital at noon -yesterday. Whether an. Inquest will be held had not been determined by the Coroner yes terday, but such action is probable today. Dispute baa arisen as to whether Motor man Burnett sounded warning before running across the steep Intersecting street- Attorney J. H. Stevenson, who was a passenger, estimates the speed of the train at IS miles an hour. The same witness says the driver of the automo bile tried to run In front of the train after be was aware of its approach. Mrs. Lerchen died from a fracture of the skull.
