L TOLD OF IN COURT Timberman Admits Curtail ment of Production at Dealers' Request. PRICES LOW AT TIME Head of Great Tellow Pine Concern Says More Was Not to Raise Val ues but to Prevent Ixsses. Price List Sfere Guide. KANSAS CITT, June 11 At the he heat of the Southern Lumber Manu facturers Association, the Long-Bell Lumber Company, which control thou sand of acres of tlmberland. curtailed Its yellow plna output S3 1-1 per cent dazing sis months of 104. So testified R. A- Long, preitdent of the company, at a hearing of the state's ouster suit against the Alleged lumber trust her today. Thl curtailment was not effected for th purpose of raising the price of lum ber, but to avoid losses by deprecia tion and needless Insurance and other expenaea. aald the witness. At that time, said Mr. Long, there was an oversupply of yellow pine on the market. Mr. Long also admitted that the as sociation appointed a price-list commit tee and auopted its report at annual and semi-annual meetinga. Price List Mere Guides. The use of. these price list by deal er was not mandatory, aald Mr. Long, but were for guidance in making sales. Incidentally. Mr. Long aaserted that if the publlo would cease Its "prosecution and persecution of the lumber trade. and would permit dealers to act to gether. 10 per cent of the timber that now goes to waste would be saved. All of Mr. Long's testimony wa taken today. Ha may ba recalled, how ever. He la the principal witness at this point and It Is believed tha hear ing here will be closed In a few daya Charles 8. Keith, president of the Cen tred Coal 4 Coke Company, was tha only other witness today. He covered practically tba same ground a did Mr. Long. Defendanta Number 4 0. Th hearing Is being conducted by John Atkinson, assistant Attorney General. The suit was brought in 108 by Governor Hadley, who was then Attorney-General. There are about 40 defendants. "Explain why tha production of lumber was curtailed 11 1-1 per cent in 1904." Mr. Long was told by one of the attorneys for the lumber dealers when It canae to cross-examination. "The lumber trade waa found to be In a demoralised condition," he replied. "The production waa far In "excess of the consumption and, as a natural re sult, there waa a slow demand for a faat-accumnlating aurplus of produc tion. The way to correct that condi tion wa to lessen the production. That waa what any sensible dealer would have done. Not to curtail production meant the piling up of lumber for which there waa no market." "The market price was down, waa It notr ."Tea" Wa th production of lumber cur tailed then to control and raise the prices" Lang; Give Reasons. There were many reasons for cur tailing the production, especially of yellow pine, which our company pro duced. It meant the piling up of lum ber that we could not sell and putting into It the cost of labor, which was about 17 to 11 .a thousand feet. The Investment naturally would lie Idle and would vnot be good business. It would mean an Increase pf taxes and increase in amount to 110,000 to 115,000 a year for each milL "Yellow pine timber depreciates rap idly when It remains In tha piles for a long time. Thla business demands that yellow pine lumber be not pro duced faster than It can be marketed. It waa not to control or advance price that we curtailed the production. It waa to avoid a heavy loss by deprecia tion and needless Insurance and other expenses. . "The sending of price list to the dif ferent dealer I the natural outcome of good business. Th price lists are only recommendations to the dealers. Our company used price lists only as a guide In offering lumber to th mar ket. - Sometime our prices are lower and sometime higher than those shown in the price Hat. There Is no penalty for not following the recommendations of the prlci list." FORTUNA IS FIRESWEPT Bank, Clnb and Several Stores Are Horned Loss $30,000. FORTUNA. Cel.. June 11.
