BOOM IN BARLEY
Sharp Competition Between
Maltsters in Middle West.
GREAT SCARCITY PREVAILS
l-p to Si.H a Bushel Paid at Chi
cago yesterday Xew Price
Record for That Market.
Wheat Closes Lower.
CHICAGO, March 23. Barley today made
an entirely new high price record In Chi
cago. Up to J1.13 a bushel was paid. The
rise today reached 2c to 4c making a total
gain of more than 20c in the last few weens.
Scarcely any of the grain is to be had and
there has developed sharp competition be
tween maltsters and brought about a boom
excelling anything of the kind previously
known In the trade.
Collapse of the dry weather flurry about
wheat came today. The fact was authori
tatively pointed out that the rainfall on whicn
the Spring crop depends does not arrive, aa
a rule, until after April 1. In consequence,
the market closed U0c lower to a shade
higher than last night. May closed steady.
High and low levels were 90Hl9O4c and
84iJSaXc. with last sales at 8vsC, a net
decline of 4 9 c
There was considerable local pressure on
corn, so that when wheat turned weak, the
coarser grain made quite a sharp descent.
May ranged from 484c to 4S'.c -and closed
,e net lower, at 484484c Cash corn
was steady. No. 2 yellow finished at 47 4
J474o.
Oats, after a rise, due to covering by
shorts, declined at the last under general
selling. Top and bottom limits of May were
31 4 8 31 Ho and S0e30c. with the close
4c down at 3ot,c
A falling off In the price of hogs carried
provisions along. At the end of the day
pork had sunk 124c to 25c: lard was
changed to 60 lower and ribs off a nickel to
a dime.
The leading futures ranged as follows:
