21 TIIE MORNING OREGONIAN, FRIDAY, MARCH 10, 1911. iiii. 1 BOX FRUIT FAVORED Oregon Apples Meet With Ap proval in Germany. BARREL SALES DECREASING fonsul-General Thackara Writes of the Requirements of the Berlin Market Quality Is an Important Factor. imird " States . Consul-Gnral A. M. Tbarkara. of Berlin. In reporting on the Gumu apple trade, njrl thnt American appl.a are much appreciated In Germany and ax bought by all das-see of people. The moat formidable, competitor ot the American fruit In the German market la tba apple tbat comes from the Austrian Tyrol, one which enjoya a well-deeerved and long standing repatatlaa for quality and flavor. The following la a translation of letter from a fruit broker of the Central Market. Berlin, written In anewer to a list of Inter rogatories aent from the Consulate-General: Apples are Imported Into Germany packed aota la boxee and la barrel, but tor the -past two years tne boxes have been pre ferred, as the fruit thus parked ws re ceived In better condition and the apples were finer. During tfae season of l'Wi-10 and llo-ll apples packed In boxea were imported from the State of Oregun and Washington. The fruit was excellent and well-graded, sorting the apples must nat ural! be done by the packer, as the tier man Importer should nut be compelled ta par duties and freight on unsorted apples, and besides inferior fruit should remain In the United State. High-grade apples packed In boxes should be wrapped In paper. I'p to the I'reeeat lime California apples tiat beea received here only la boxes, tt bile they excel In quality the boxed apple from Eastern Mates, the packing and qual ity of the Oregon and Washington fruit were superior. In my opinion the German trade In American barrel applea 1.1 decrease from year to year on account of the faulty packing and grading ot the fruit. I am also of the opinion that the Imports of Ameman apples Into this country would Increase enormously If the prevailing defects could be eliminated and the American shippers would send only applea In good condltloa and free from San Jos scale. KTRONO WHEAT DEMAND FROM JAf AN tile Made at the High Trie Sine the Mew aval Brgaa. The Oriental demand for wheat continues strong. The largest lot of wheat In Central Ore gon, aggregating I0OO ton, was so!J at Madras yesterday and will be brought out soon on the Oregon Trunk.
