25 GOLDEN GUL fflONUNIONMEN Owners of Tillamook Vessel Object to Overtime Wages for Handling Cargo. COST REDUCED ONE-HALF Agrnt llears That Move Has Been Made to Prrvrar I-oadlng at Va rious Pocks Payment of Straight Scale Offered. Pecanse of the employment of non Bnlon men to discharge and load tha Tlll tmwk utirarr Golden Gate, on her last voyage to -tnla port. Mr. Chase said yesterday that recently he Informed the lonsshoremen that It waa a loalnc proposition for himself and associates to pay the arale of li cents an hour and tZ1 cents overtime, but that he was willing to pay SS cents an hour straight time. lie said that the dockmea promised that the subject would be re ferred to the union for a decision, but that he received no reply and has paid the scale. On the arrival of the tjolden Gate Saturday he secured nonunion men. ravin them 3j cents an hour and suc ceeded In dispatching the vessel. When the nonunion men appeared for their wtg'm. he says, they had been in fluenced by longshoremen and refused to acett less tftan ti cents an hour. H declined to psy the rate. They returned yesterday for their wages, which they ac cpt'il on the basis nf 2i cents. "TV loaded the Golden Gate at half the cost that has been' incurred in the past, and while there la no disposition cn our part to fljtht the union, we feel that w have not been treated properly." said Mr. Chase. "Threats hare been made we will rue the step and that the steam er will not be permitted to use nonunion men In loadlnjt at other docks, but it Is rur Intention to continue with nonunion men. Tha steamer has such a short lay erer hera usually that It is necessary to work a few hours overtime, but S2' cents a a hour Is more than we feel is due for tha character of labor employed." It has been learned that the Nor wegian steamer Christian Bora, en route to Puret Sound with a cargo of Government coal, was fixed at JO ehltltns-s to load wheat outward from I'ortlaiid. She was taken with the usual option of Tacoma. Balfour. Guth rie aY Company, being the charterers. The British Steamer Camphltl. which arrived at San Kranclsro CVtober IS and was reported as bound for Port land, la said to be on the disengaged list. Lumber from the Pacific Northwest may form the bulk of the eastbound shipments In the Bates at tneseorougn service, which is to extend to the At lantic Coast via Ancon. but It I planned to carry lumber only to San Francisco and Los Angeles. The new line Is assured of westbound cargo In lara-e lota, and large cargoes will move East from California, but In entering the Portland and Puget bound terri tory the promoters are counting on hauling full cargoes of lumber south If contracts are made witn mo r ran cisco buyers. II 8. Bates was to have reached Port land today to be present at tonight's meeting of the transportation commit tee of the Chamber of Commerce. II was in Seattle last week, but was obliged to return to San Francisco on Business connected with the new serr lea and is expected hare la a few U?a. At tonight's gathering the subject of encouraging tha Panama line will he broached and It will probably be made clear to shippers that Portland may lose the line unless efforts are put forth to provide business, even if it Is largely confined to bulky ship ments handled by rail. This port can send a large share -f the lumber hauled south, if Ban Fran cisco Interests sign transportation con tracts, but as such a move would pre cipitate strong opposition on the part of the steam schooner owners, tha proposition Is somewhat doubtful. AIM COKED TO mm STAI CURED Original Methods I depend upon nobody's theories," but treat my patients in the light of my own knowledge and experience Scientific Treatment My success has come as a reward of ability and honest, earnest, scientific application of thorough understanding. There is not another physician or specialist anywhere who treats menVailments as I treat them. .This is a fact that should be duly consid ered by those who have repeatedly been disappointed in their efforts to obtain a cure. In no other branch of practice has medical science so lagsed and the forms of treatment now commonly employed among the profession are largely based upon theories that have been handed down through generations of doctors. An evidence of this is the prevalent in ability to successfully cope with several of those ailments peculiar to men. I have learned Nature's laws applying to their cause and cure. Through this knowledge I have perfected forms of treatment wholly orig inal and distinctive. Every requirement for a thorough cure is scientif ically met, and as a result I am able to completely master cases commonly regarded as incurable. I especially invite those who have been long af flicted to consult me. My success in curing difficult cases has brought my marvelous growth of practice and made me the foremost specialist treating men's ailments. MEW ONLY. The Leading Specialist. CONTRACTED AILMEJfTS. STOP TAKING DRUGS Don't ruin your stomach by dop ing It with poisons. Drugs are made to sell, not to cure. The first impulse of a man who finds himself ailing in any way is to take some kind of medicine. Doesnif matter what kind, Just as long as it gives him temporary re lief. That's where the danger lies. The action of drugs Is like that of wnisKy. v nisKy will cause a man to "brace up" feel strong and full of vim for a few hours, but when the effect of the alcohol passes away the old stupid feeling re turns worse than ever. Now, drugs will give relief for a few hours, but the trouble returns as soon as the drug loses its power to stimulate. Every minute that drugs give relief they are busily engaged in doing harm. They destroy the delicate lining of the stomach and weaken the nerves. They mix with the digestive juices, causing poor digestion and constipation. Every part of your vitals that is affected by drugs Is weakened by them. There's only one way to cure any aliment. That way is to assist Na ture Drugs don't do that. Nature Is the best doctor, and sometimes will accomplish a cure In spite of drugs. Then drugs get the credit for what Nature alone did. The help Nature needs Is elec tricity. It's the power that runs the machinery of your body, and most all ailments are due to the failure or breaking down of some vital part, the stomach, liver, kidneys, heart or nerves. The reason any organ falls to work properly is because it hasn't the power electricity. Restore this force where it Is needed and pain and disease will disappear. Electra Vlta does that. Electra-Vlta is an electric body batterv, applied while you sleep It sends a stream of electric life Into everv nerve and tissue of the body, building up vitality and strength, and removing the cause of disease. Electra-Vlta does not shock or blister. The only sensation Is a mild, soothing glow. Electra-Vita is not a electric belt. It never needs charging, for It makes its own power continuously. Electra-Vlta haa proven a great success. It has cured people all over the West, whom drugs had failed to benefit. a a a "Your Elecfra- Vita has cured me of a very bad stomach trouble.
