Local Market.
UNDERTONE IS STEADY
Fancy Calves IJft the Old Level of
iprlces, but Packers Are Not
Willing to Pay Former
Sura for Hogs.
Yesterday's offerings at the yards em
braced all classes of livestock and a good
demand developed. The quality showed wide
variety, as is Indicated by the prices paid.
Only one load of steers of medium grade
was moved and they brought $4.20. The
cows did not grade high, either, and sold
at $:: to 31. Heavy calves brought $3.73 to
$4. while a lot of fancy lelghtwelghta lifted
the quotation on that class up to $7.00.
Several loads of mutton material were put
on sale. Top wethers again command $4.23,
whole good ewea sold at $3.23. The lambs
disposed of graded medium and brought
$4.23 to $0.
In the hog market. $10.23 was as far as
the packers would go yesterday. A small
lot brought $10.20 and another load $10.

It was a market of specialties. The ad

Make a Drive on Wheat Prices

Shipments Reported for the Week
Are Twice as Heavy as a "Year
Ago Stocks at Primary
Points Piling Vp.
CHICAGO. Sept. 30. There was a bear drive
at grain prices in the last few minutes today
and the market, which had been wavering for
Sims time, cloeed weak. During most ot the
day wheat was higher than yesterday, but was
unable to make any noteworthy gain. The
slight rtee was due mainly to the feet that
Liverpool quotations were not so weak as
had been expected. Buying power, however,
was not Important and ttere waa increased
selling with each advance. One reason waa
that the relative bullishness In the English
market had partly for a basis predictions of
lifrhter world's shipment, but the fact devel
oped that the total, although smaller than last
neek, would be larger than a year ago. Ar
gentine, Indian and Australian shipments were
jthown to be more than twice as heavy as at
the corresponding time 12 months previous.
Then, too, the stocks at primary points In
this country kept piling up Incessantly. De
cember ranged from 96c to 97Vic and In the
end was 96S96V4C, a net low of c.
In corn a new low record price for the aea
son was set. December fluctuated between

Shorts were the only buyers of oats. Decem
ber sold from 324 to 33c and hniehed HtHsC

Some firmness in provisions was followed
by liberal September short selling. The late
quotations showed pork 20c down, lard 16c

vance to 10c decline.
