THE MOKXLNG OliEliONIAN. THURSDAY, J1AY 5, 1910. 19 BERRY MARKET BHD Big Receipts and Cold Weath er Break Market. NO RELIEF IN SIGHT SOON Prices Range From 4 0 Cents a Crate Up liecord Time Made by Banana Shipment From Xew Orleans. An unfortunate combination of circum stances has put the strawberry market to the bad. The weather has been distinctly against trade and in addition to this re ceipts have been excessive and promise to continue so throughout the week. Portland dealers, in the hope that weather conditions would be normal, ordered heavily In Califor nia for shipment this week and at the same time shippers in the Southern state have consigned liberal Quantities to this market. This heavy influx of berries, together with the cold, wet weather, has resulted in a demoralised market. Receipts of berries from Southern Oregon points have also increased steadily. Not all that came In yesterday could be worked off before the close of business hours. Sales of Oregon were made at 'i at crate. As for the receipts from California, a good part of them had to be carried over to be added to the big receipts that are looked for this morning. Newcastle and Florin berries sold all the way from 50 cents to J1.25 a crate, while Los Angeles stock moved at 4075c a crate. A straight car of Los Angeles berries is flu this morning and about two cars of Florins will also come in. The Willamette Valley and local crop is In good condition, but Is being held back by the cool weather. Aside from berries, business was good on the street. A fair-sized shipment of cher ries arrived and they moved at $1.75 a box. A good assortment of vegetables was offered and prices. In the main, were steady. The Ryan banana train came In yesterday over the O. R. & N., instead of the North ern, as heretofore. Three cars were left here and the remainder went north. This shipment made the best time on record from New Orleans eight days and l'J hours. SMALL. INTEREST SHOWN IN GRAIN. Mil! Feed Prices Are Cut by Country Millers. Very little interest is shown In the local wheat market and prices are almost wholly nominal. Oats and barley are also quiet. Flour prices are being maintained with a fair volume of business. The mill-feed mar ket, however, is decidedly weak because of heavy offerings by some of the country millers and prices are In buyets favor. Hay prices hold their own. A late Cali fornia trade clrcu lar says : "Receipts are very light, but fully enough to meet all the demand which is In this city at the present time, and the market continues along in a dull and uninteresting state.'Con sumers will not. buy other than for immedi ate needs and are no doubt figuring on the large crops of hay which they are already beginning to harvest, reducing prices even more than at present. The sound of the mower can be heard in a great many sec tlons at the present time, and we predict the arrival of new hay into the market within a week. Consigned hay is still being sent to this market even at the exception ally low prices for which same has to be sold. The majority of this hay, however. Is that upon which loans have been negotiated and shipments are being forced to pay ad vances. We have found this to be the case in several Instances the past week. A great many holders of hay who do not require money have decided to carry their stock over into the new season. The wisdom of this we doubt at the present time." Local receipts, in cars, were reported by the Merchants Exchange as follows: Wheat. Barley. Flour. Oats. Hay. Monday . . l'uesduy . . There was no material change in the egg market yesterday. Keceipts were not large, nor was the demand particularly active, prices -were steady. Poultry was in light supply and firm. A small shipment of live California, broilers was received .and sold at $6 per dozen. .Butter, both city and outside creamery, cleaned up well. The movement In cheese was also active. fcliort Kun of Maple Sap. Eastern advices report a short run of maple sap this season. While the crop is light, the quality is better than usual. Kastern dealers have withdrawn quotations on pure sap. 1 Bank Clearings. Bunk clearings of the Northwestern cities yesterday were as follows: Clearings. Balances. In some quarters there U a be lief that prices have reached the bottom and that the efforts to still further reduce prices are being made by packers who are anxious to secure butter for storage pur poses. A. little butter has already been placed In storage here. Portland offered little butter today, as packers are said be picking up all the surplus there. Eggs were weak, with most sales at 2To. Cheese was also weak, at 16HlSc. lemons were materially firmer, being held as high as S5.23. Celery was very scarce today. Several houses were entirely out and unable to get enourh elsewhere to nil orders. Serrles were in somewhat better demand and under lighter receipts prices had tendency to strengthen. The flrst Kenne- wick berries arrived and were quoted at $9 a crate. Wheat was firmer, with SOc paid for blue stem. Oats were weak. ESTIMATED AT MILLIONS New Turn In Affairs Affords Great Relief to the Financial Mar ket Money Easier at New York- and Abroad. NEW YORK, May 4. The professional trading element In the stock market was inclined to look with suspicion on the mani festation of strength today, owing to the persistence with which liquidation has been pressed on small advances lately- Neverthe less, the developments were important in direction of real relief from some of the factors that have borne moat heavily on the financial situation. Foremost rilace In these developments is taken by the resumption of foreign demand for bond issuos. The day's rumors on that subject were varied and embraced a wide assortment of reported sales in Paris, Lon don and Berlin. While none or tnese was officially verified, the corroborative indica tions were sufficient to warrant the assump tion that large transactions were being con summated in the International markets. The most clearly deftrned reports pointed to New York City revenue warrants, tit. raui ana Big Four bonds and. In vaguer terms, other railroad bond issues. Estimates of the amount of these sales are from $10,000,000 to more than $100,000,000. The London money market gave evidence today that the period of strain in that mar ket was definitely over. The arrival in Lon don of last Wednesday's heavy gold ship ment from New York coincided with the decisive decline in money rates. Sales of bonds abroad involve, of course. prominent addition to the remittances mado on interest payments, but this con sideration Is overwelghed by the evident ability to employ additional capital on ad vantageous terms In domestic enterprises. with tha plain indication offered by the bond market of scarcity of such capital available in our own markets. The funding of the country's indebtedness on account of commercial balances into mortgage loans operate to afford reltaf from the demands on the money market to meet these maturi ties. The new turn In the bond market ob scured the tonics which have been weighing on stocks. Reports of further curtailment of Iron production were received and uneasi ness over th copper trade situation was unabated. There is anxiety over the show ing to be made by the coming Government crop report. Bonds were firmer. Total sales, par value. $2,354,000. United States bonds" weare un changed on call.
