STORES TO HAVE BOOTHS Prominent Women and Girls ot Portland Will Have Charge of Sales Money Goes to Visiting Xurse Association to Spend. "We must care for the consumptive In the rlgrht place. In the right way. and at the right time, until he is cured, instead of, as now, in the wrong place, in the wrong way, at the wrong time, until he Is dead." This Is the conclu sion arrived at by the Visiting Nurse Association in its anti-tuberculosis campaign, which Includes the sale of Red Cross stamps and postal cards. This year 1.000,000 stamps, or stick ers, and 10.000 postal cards will be put on sale throughout Oregon. Within the next few days booths will be opened in the department stores and at Wood ard, Clarke & Co.'s drugstore. Prom inent matrons and maids will have charge of these stamp and postal card sales. At Olds, Wortraan & King's, Mrs. James Mcl. Wood will direct the nale; at Meier & Frank's, Mrs. David Honeyman, and at Lipman, Wolfe & Co.'s, Miss Susan Clarke. Miss Mai Hirsch will have charge of the booth at Woodard, Clarke & Co.'s The booth at the postpffice has already been in working order, for several days. The demand for stamps has been heavy at the Visiting Nurse Associa tion's headquarters, room 601 Medical tmlldlng, where Miss Gilbert Is In at tendance. The Federation of Women's Clubs Is active throughout the state, and the Tuesday Afternoon Club, which was the banner club last year In stamp sales, has again begun an active cam paign.. These stamps do not take the place of postage, but are decorative stickers to be placed on packages or letters. ZeLSt year 2000 was cleared In Port land by their sale, and had the com mittee not run out of stamps the sum would have been larger. Huge posters have been hung . an nouncing the campaign, and reproduc tions of the stamp are being shown at the vaudeville houses and moving pic ture shows. Today general committees are mak ing a canvass of the city. Several will visit the various office buildings, others will make a store-to-store can vass among' business firms. A small percentage of the. proceeds derived from the sale will be sent to the Na tional Red Cross Society to cover ex penses, and the rest will be used en tirely for the care of tubercular poor in Oregon. Cases of phthisis in the incipient stage are sent to the Open Air Sana torium at Mllwaukle and to Oak Grove. Almost all the cases sent there in the past year have either recovered or aa improving rapidly. I am In sympathy with the firemen in their request for more liberty, but the cost of maintaining the department is already so great I do not feel warranted in adding to it. A soldier who has suffered all kinds of hardships and their consequent ills, says that he has found almost lnstast relief from rheumatism, lumbago and kidney trouble by procuring from his druggist two ounces of Salerene and four ounces pure olive oil, thoroughly mixed and taken in two teaspoonful doses every 3 to 4 hours until relieved, one teaspoonful three times a day. Sicily lost 60,000 inhabitants by earth quake In 1693. Reduction in Pay Would Meet With Favor. Mayor Simon yesterday took up with Chief Campbell the request of members of the fire department for 12 hours a week liberty in addition to the 12 hours now granted. The Mayor favors the petition, which he thinks Is fair, but he will investigate the request of "the Chief to employ' more men to take the places of those who are oft duty. It is regarded as probable that the firemen will eventually secure what they have asked for. The Mayor asked Chief Campbell to find out If the firemen will accept a slight reduction in their pay, if the city grants them additional time off. The financial side of the question greatly troubles Mayor Simon, for the cost of operating the Fire Department is enormous. Chief Campbell told the Mayor It will require $33,000 a year more to employ relief men. If the 12 extra hours a week are granted, but the Mayor Is not yet satisfied this Item Is necessary. As at present organized, the Fire Department, the most expensive of all the city government's branches, costs more than $400,000 annually. Chief Campbell Insists upon a full comple ment of officers and men for every sta tion, no matter how remote it may be. This system calls for one chief, one assistant chief, three battalion chiefs, 28 captains, 25 lieutenants and 172 men. The Chief's salary Is' $225 a month; Assistant Chief, $175; Battalion Chiefs, $150 each; captains, $115; lieutenants. $110. and the men $100 each. The monthly payroll aggregates $24,974. New companies are constantly being added to the department, two being un der way at this time; and more are contemplated. It is the belief of some who have investigated the situation that there are too many officers in the department drawing large salaries, and that some of them could be dis pensed with without Injuring the ser vice. Many companies do not answer a call a month, and the policy of main taining a captain and a lieutenant at each of these is criticized. "I do not think that 12 hours a week off duty Is enough for any many," said 1 BABY SHOW IS TUESDAY Feature of House Beautiful Show Expected to Attract. Next Tuesday aftornoon at the Ar mory a parade and exhibition of ort ,land's finest babies will be held. This is the feature of the second day's ex hibition of the House Beautiful show under the auspices of the People's In stitute of Portland.
