JOHNSON TO FIGHT Match Made for Ten Rounds With Kaufman. NO STALLING ALLOWED Champion Steps Into Breach Made by O'Brien'B Failure to Sgn No Beclston Without Knock out Is Agreement. SAN FRANCISCO, Augr- 2- Jck Johnson, heavyweight champion of the world, and Al Kaufman, of San Fran cisco, were matched tonight to fight 10 rounds at Coffroth's arena In this city on September 9. The men will fight at catch weight, and. If they are both on their feet at the end of th tenth round, no de cision will be given. The bout will be refereed by Eddie Smith, of Oakland. Nothing was made public about the di vision of the purse. This match between the colored champion and the Californian, made by James Coffroth. was somewhat un expected. It followed Coffroth's failure to sign up Philadelphia Jaclc O'Brien - and Kaufman for a ten-round bout on that date. Coffroth hunted up John son, who Is in the city, and succeeded in getting him to take 0'Brien"s place. Eddie Smith, before accepting the position of referee, said that, if he be lieved from their aotions that the men were stalling at any time during the 10 rounds, he would dlsqualllfy them and declare It no fight. It was with this understanding that the articles were signed. , , i T.i - t. xntno. llo-ht training- at JUU11DUII B --B Emeryville, across the bay from San Francisco. Jim Barry had the best of a ten-round fight with Jack Burns at the arena of the Pacifio Athletic Club here tonight No decision was given from the ring. Barry sent Bums to the floor In both the second and sixth rounds with right swings and at times showed flashes of his former speed, but for the most part the rounds were devoid of anything like good or rapid fighting and were replete with clinches and foot racing. In the tenth Barry went after his man and had him In great distress at the end of the fight. Before the fight started the winner was publicly promised a fight wiA Jack John son, heavyweight champion, in this city some time during the latter part of Sep tember. Burns showed lack of speed throughout all the ten rounds and contented himself with left jabs to the head, which never seemed to distress Barry, although his mouth was bleeding from the first round on through the fight. Burns landed repeatedly, but his blows lacked steam. What cleverness he dis played was shown In in-fighting, and many times he forced Barry to break ground. The decision of the sporting writers of the morning papers tomorrow will de termine which of the two will fight John eon, but doubtless Barry will be chosen.
