Ho Declined $7000 Seattle Pul pit Church In Southern City Pays $5000 a Year. Dr. J. Whitcomb Brougher. of th W hite Tempi, will leave tonight for Los Anseles. where he will confer with the pulpit committee of the Temple Baptist Church there. He has as yet given no intimation of an Intention to change his pulpit, and declared yesterday he had not made up his mind to entertain a ca'.I from the Los Anseles church, of which Rev. "Bob" Burdette was pastor until recently. "I have always been perfectly frank witli the people of my church." said Dr. Brougher yesterday morning. In the White Temple pulpit. " desire to state to them that on account of the persistent pressure, brought to bear by the pulpit committee of the Temple Church in Los Angeles I have consented to go there this week for a conference with that commit tee. This has no special significance, ex cept that so long as Baptist churches se cure their pastors the way they do. the only way a church can escape the an noyance of having Its, pastor interviewed by pulpit committees of other churches Is to get one that no other church wants." The Los Angeles church has been pay ing Dr. Burdette J.0 a year. Dr. Brougher receives W000 a year here. He said yesterday that in case he does con sider a change, the question of salary will not enter into his decision. "I was offered $70 a year some time ago to take a Seattle pulpit, but de clined It." he said. Active members of the White- Temple congregation, members of other churches In Portland, and many belonging t no church at all, kept Dr. Brougher's tele phone buzzing a large part of the time yesterday urging him to remain with his present pastorate. A prominent member of the White Temple, in talking of the possibility that Dr. Brougher will leave Portland, said he had no Idea where an other preacher could be found to fill his place. The names of pastors in large Eastern Baptist churches have been sug gested, but there is none at present who is known to desire a change of pastorate. "Hard Nuts to Crack" was the subject of Dr. Brougher's sermon yesterday morning, in which he asked the reason for suffering and other evils, answering the questions by Scripture quotations. The sermon last night was- the fourth In the series on Dr. Brougher's trip to Alaska. Taking as a subject "Glaciers and Icebergs," he described the Mulr "ice-stream" and ice-floes through which a vessel passes on its way to Alaska. "A great crystal cathedral" was the term the speaker used to describe the glacier. "It rises at the edge of the water in a wall from 150 to 500 feet high." he said. "It is not a perpendicular precipice, but is broken into towers and turrets and ;rested minarets. The lance-like spires, all of glittering Ice, clear and transpar ent, are shaded through all the tints of blue. In the full glory of an unclouded Summer day the lce-cllffs blaxe and flash in the sunlight until it seems as if we were looking upon a diamond city. "As the ship creeps close to the glacier the steamer whistle sets the mountain gorge reverberating with the sound, and. Incredible as It may seem, the disturbance in the atmosphere causes a great ice-cliff to break away from the glacier and fall with the roar of artillery into the turbid waters below. Some glaciers move 35 inches a day. others 50 to 60 feet." The speaker went on to say that people of Iceberg enthusiasm seldom accomplish much. He urged the young people of r?s church to cultivate congeniality. He said: "A secret of success in life Is an attrac tive, winsome personality. Many of the wars of the world, and many conflicts between capital and labor could have been avoided If the leaders of men had been capable of harmonizing the diverse ele ments of society Into co-operation." The lack of sympathy and hospitality the' preacher attributed partly to present day boarding-house conditions. He said if p-ople would practice hospitality, they would understand each other better. DR. BROrGHER IS WANTED Temple Congregation Looks to Port land Man to Fill Pulpit. LOS ANGELES. Aug. 22. (Special.) It was announced at the Temple Audi torium that the Rev. J. W. Brougher. of Portland, - would certainly take the pulpit of the big church next Sunday. While It Is) regarded as almost certain thnt he will be named as the successor of Dr. Burdette by the members of the Auditorium congregation, no one in au thority could be found today who would positively confirm the statements in the local press beyond declaring that he would certainly be here this week. tine of the trustees- said Dr. Brougher's coming hao been considered for some weeks, ever since it became apparent tt:at Dr. Burdette would be unable again to take charge of the labors of the pas torate. Overtures were made at once, upon receipt of the news that Dr. Bur-d-tte intended to resign, and the answer received from Dr. Brougher is said to have, been satisfactory to the trustees ar.d congregation. Dr. Brougher is expected here about Friday, or possibly Thursday, and will at that time go thoroughly into the de tail of the work with the trustees. The ta.-.k confronting the pastor of the Tem ple Is in many respects more difficult than that which the minister in charge of the ordinary church has to face, and It requires a man of Dr. Brougher's or Dr. Burdette's capabilities successfully to handle the work. There has been no hint of the salary which the Temple Auditorium has of fered Dr. Brougher. but tt Is said to be the same that has been paid to Dr. Bur dette for -several years. FAMINE IS FEARED Railroads Assembling Cars Near Grain Centers Stocks Drop. NEW YORK. Aug. 22. The severest declines were recorded by the Harrlman issues. Mr. Harriman's state of health being the cause. Five Issues Union Pacific. Southern Pacific New York Central, Reading and United States Steel have made up the bulk of the week's extensive operations. Prices now average about 5 points lower than a week ago. and to some extent the market is much better off. The general trade outlook is encouraging, the volume of orders being probably greater than since the Fall of 1907. There is prospect of a rising tide In business and of un precedented activity this coming Winter. The enactment of the new tariff has been followed by a heavy release of order. Traffic officials of Western roads are assembling cars near all the' grain cen ters, and it is their belief that October will bring a car famine. Movements of merchandise are increasing, while rail road earnings, after small declines in June and the early part of July, are again rising and now are well in ad vance of last year. BARK HOGHE M REEF FRENCH SHIP" DROPS ANCHOR OFF ELK CREEK. Port of Portland Tug Goes to Haul Windjammer From Perilous Position. ASTORIA. Or.. Aug. 22. (Special.) The French bark Hoche. Captain Aug frey. is lying at anchor today in a dangerous position less than a mile off shore between Elk Creek and Tilla mook Head. 20 miles south of the mouth of the Columbia River. In a fog this morning, the captain of the Hoche Is supposed to have lost his bearings, and, in the belief that he was close to the Columbia River, kept too close inshore. When the fog lift ed he discovered the currents had car ried him one and a half miles inside Tlllamosik Light, and only a few ca bles' lengths from shore, in the prox imity of dangerous reefs. The Hoche at once dropped anchor. At 11:20 o'clock the Hoche was sight ed by the steam schooner Northland. Captain Erickson. from San Francisco to Portland. Captain Erickson spoke the Hoche with an offer of assistance, which the Frenchman declined. On his arrival here, Captain Erickson at once notified the Port of Portland of the Hoche's Derllous position. The Port of Portland tug Wallula went to her relief this evening. It is said the French cap tain refused the offer of assistance made by the Northland because he did not want to pay the salvage charges. The Hoche is out 64 days from New castle, with ccTal tor Portland. While her position is one of considerable peril, a southeast wind was reported blowing off shore with a light sea, so that unless the wind changes and blows in from the ocean, no immediate alarm is felt for her safety. It is though't here that if the wind continues as it is, the IToche may even be able to work her way out by herself before the tugs arrive. About 10 years ago the Erltish four-masted bark Iverna anchored in almost the same place as the Hoche Is reported to be, for all one afternoon, and then sailed .pff by herself. P. F. Dundon Invents Lumber Barge P. F. Dundon Is the patentee and Inventor of a skeleton barge, which will be built here and tried as an ex periment in transporting logs and lum ber from the Columbia River to Cali fornia ports, and not J. H. Bullock, as reported. Mr. Dundon Is so confident his venture -will be a success that he will soon advertise for the construc tion of the new craft, and expects to take out the first cargo on the barge himself. The proposed skeleton barge will have a capacity for handling about 3.000.000 feet of lumber. If a success, it will afford cheap transportation for lumber and logs. Arrivals at San Pedro.
