AMBITIOUS TO OPEN GAME Gambler Told by Executive That There Is No Chance for Man of His Calling in Portland Ad vised to Go to Seattle. "Nothing doingr" is virtually what Mayor b.mon told a representative of a number of gamblers who called at the executive office in the City Hall yes terday morning and "felt out" the head of the municipal government. While the man's face -was familiar to the Mayor, the latter having seen him about the city at various times in the past, his name was not . recalled and his Identity Is therefore unknown, but the turn-down he get was none the less effective. Portland will not be a good place for a business which once flour ished here. "1 want to see you Just a moment," aid the polished knight of the green cloth as he entered the office of the Mayor's private secretary! "Walk in. sir. said the Mayor, who happened to be waiting at the door, after the conclusion of a conference with several men. "What wculd happen If I should rent a little room somewhere and start a quiet llttUt game;" was the query put to tho Mayor by the aforesaid knight of the green clotn. "It would not run long." jyomptly re plied the Mayor. "Well. I don't mean that I want to open a big gambling-house and run it wide open." persisted the man, "I sim ply want to run a small game 'on the square.' in a quiet way." "You cannot do so in Portland while I am Mayor." said the executive firmly. 'Well, "they run quiet little games In Seattle." said the man. "and I thought maybe it would be permitted here." "I was in Seattle myself last month, replied Mayor Simon, "and I know that It is a fine city: I advise you to go there and run your little game; you can't do it here." "Thank you," said the man, smiling ly, and he walked out. It was thought by some that Mr. Simon would "open the town a little" when he became Mayor. Because It was believed that he would overlook "quiet lltlte games." a number of the old-time gamblers have visited the city from time to time. STORK EXCUSEF0R SPEED Fast Driver Discharged When He Explains His Hurry. There are Instances in Portland where fast driving is permissible. At least there is one Instance which formed a precedent In Municipal Court yester day morning when G. H. Spaff. of 340 Second street, was discharged after be ing arrested by Patrolman Leavens while driving faster than the law al lows. Spa'f explained to Judge Ben nett he had received news from home that a visit was expected from the tra ditional stork and was racing against time. He won. too, despite the fact he was delayed by the patrolman long enough to post a $5 ball. Ample evidence of the truthfulness of his story, he said, cauld be obtained by a visit to his home or from a cer tain Portland physician. "Congratulations,", said Judge Ben nett as he wrote "discharged" opposite Spaf f's name, while court attendants laughed TO BE OPENED Street Committee Favors Ex tension of Thoroughfare. VOTE ON QUESTION CLOSE Several targe Property-owners 'Pro test Against Action, Declaring . They Will Derive No Ben efit Therefrom. Oak street, from West Park to Burn sdde streets, -sill be opened, if the City Council adopts the majority report of its committee on streets, recommended yes terday afternoon. However, two mem bers of the five present dissented, and a minority report will be submitted, as suring a verbal battle when the matter comes up again for final decision, Wed nesday, August 25. ADOut 50.000 Is in volved in the project, with 63 lots favor ing or at least not remonstrating, and 19 lots opposed. ' The Council street committee held' a special meeting yesterday afternoon, for the express purpose of afTording an op portunity for those concerned to be heard, and a number appeared, both to remonstrate against and to urge the opening of the street. All were given the privilege of the floor by Chairman Annand. who gave them every chance to present their views. After the matter was left with the committee. Mr. Annand was' called upon to decide it, as Council men Belding and Kubli voted against and Councllmen Wallace and Menefee voted for opening tho street; Mr. Annand voted to open it. Among those who protested against the opening and declared it an unnecessary expense and annoyance to property owners were C. K. Henry, Benjamin I. Cohen, president of the Portland Trust Company; C. V. DWph, Robert T. Piatt, H. B. Linthicum, representing the Weln hard estate, and others. They argued that the assessments recommended by the viewers are out of all proportion to the benefit to be obtained, and also that the whole project ia unnecessary, thei'e being, they said. plenty of streets already. The Corbett estate, Isaac Swett and. others urged the adoption of the view ers" report, saying that the opening of the street is essential to the growth of the city and for the accommodation of traffic. "As far as I am concerned," declared Mr. Henry, "I fail to eee where I derive any benefit at all, although my assess ment Is JS000. My property is near Sec ond street and close to the river; if some who maintain old shacks on Front, First and Second streets would tear them down and put up modern structures, it would benefit my property more than this proposed opening of Oak street." "My company is assessed $1960," said President Cohen, of the Portland Trust Company, "but I will say frankly, with out hesitation, . that personally I would not give a J10 bill for the benefit I will gil if the street is opened." Several others, representing large prop erty interests spoke likewise, and a few who appeared urged the committee to recommend to the Council the adoptlen of the viewers' report, thus ordering the street opened. WashlagtoBs Plaame Spots lie In the low, marshy bottoms of the Potomac, the breeding ground of ma laria germs. These germs cause chills, fever and ague, biliousness, jaundice, lassitude, weakness and general debility and bring suffering or death to thou sands yearly. But Electric Bitters never fail to destroy them and cure malaria troubles. "They are the best all-round tonic and cure for malaria I ever used' writes B. M. James, of Louellen, S. C. They cure Stomach, Liver, Kidney and Blood Troubles and will prevent Tyr phoid. Try them. 50c Guaranteed by all druggists. Shoe bargains at Rosenthal's sale. MAN DISCOVERS RARE COIN Reads of Findings of Freak 18 47 $10 Piece, Has One in Pocket. George Jackson, 408 Concord building, reading in yesterday morning's paper an Associated Press account of a man In San Francisco who bad paid Into the Police Court a $10 gold coin which proved to be one of six freak pieces coined in the year 1847, and valued by collectors at $500, examined several coins which he had in his own pocket, and dis covered its duplicate. The difference between the freak colhs and others is that the words, "In God We Trust" are omitted. This omis sion was made by accident and six coins escaped into circulation before the stop order was received. These coins are now sought eagerly by collectors. Jackson does not remember from whom he obtained the freak piece. Trunks, suitcases and bags. Largest variety at Harris Trunk Co. . Every pound of Smith's meat is absolutely fresh, sweet Oregon 6tock.
