The Peninsula Rose Festival Association held a short session at University Park Wednesday night and adjourned until tonight, when a meeting will be held In the rooms of the St. John Commercial mud. At mis meeting all business connected with the festival will be closed. TH ley, proprietor of the New Grand Cen tral hotel, was blamed for the death of Andrew Schilling, the 17-year-old waiter who sustained injuries In the hotel ele vator Wednesday night, from the effects of which he died later at Good Samaritan Hospital, by a Coroner's Jury yesterday .fternoon. The Jury's verdict relates that Tilley had been In the habit of leaving the door of the elevator shaft open on the ground floor, and by reason of this young Schilling came to his death. By that time O. W. Boeschke. chief engineer of the Harriman lines, will have completed the plans for the proposed structure, which are expected to meet the requirements of the members of the Port. The people of Portland will be the guests at a grand trolley Tarty. excurrton. in the latest sight-seeing cars of the Portland Rail way Company, the evening of Friday, August 13. This excursion Is given by Webfoot Camp No. 65, W. O. W.. to its members, friends and general public. There will be music, refreshments, horns, bells and flags. At the conclusion of the ride the excursionists1 will congregate at Council Crest, where dancing will be held. Women of the Woodcraft convention, including grand officers, delegates and members, took a trip to Cascade Locks yesterday, the entire day being spent on the river. Sessions will be resumed this morning at lo o'clock in the Women of Woodcraft hall at Tenth and Taylor streets. Re ports will be rendered by various com mittees. Belinke was released on ball. Itfvs Ashbs Start Fire. During the absence from home of the family of F. lj. Howard. 987 Vernon avenue, fire broke out shortly after 5 o'clock yesterday aft ernoon. The damages was about JSOO. The blaza started in the kitchen and burned its way up to the attic and through the roof. Ashes dumped In an elevator shaft started the fire. Patrolmaw Holz Fined. At a meet ing of the police committee of the Exec utive Board of the City" Council, held yesterday morning at police headquar ters. Patrolman Holz was convicted of sleeping on fits beat, which Is near the Gambrinus brewery, and wao find 130. He was also reprimanded by Captain Slover last night. Remember other lots In this vicinity are held at higher figures. F. S. Akin. 623 Chamber of Commerce. HEART ATTACK FATAL E. H. STOITE, PIOXEER HOTEL 'MAX, DIES SCDDENXT. Was Widely Known Among Travel ing Public Throughout Pa cific Northwest. Edward Henry Stolte, aged 68 years, a pioneer hotel clerk of this city, died sud denly from heart failure last night at his home, 275 Williams avenue. Returning to his home late yesterday afternoon, Mr. Btolte complained of not feeling very well and reclined on a couch, where his dead body was discovered by members of the family a few minutes later. Arrange ments for the funeral have not been con cluded. Mr. Stolte was a native of Hamburg, Germany, where he was born In 1S4L At the age of 12 years he came to America with his parents and In 1S6S Joined an emigration party westward-bound, and lo cated In Portland In the Fall of that year. In 1871 he married Mary U. Riddell. who, with two sons, survives him. The eons are: Dr. C. B. Stolte, a dentist, of this city, and W. V. Stolte, an employe of the Examiner, San Francisco. Cal. Fow other men were better known to the traveling public 1n the Padflc North west than was Mr. Stolte, for he was ac tively engaged In the hotel business from a short time after his arrival in the state until the time of his death. For a num ber of years he was employed as clerk at the Imperial, a position he resigned three years ago to become day clerk at the Es mond. His death occurred a few hours after he left his work at the Esmond yes terday afternoon. BATTERY A TO TAKE FIELD (inardmen Leave Today for Target Practice at Seaside. With four pieces of artillery. 130 rounds of ammunition In the caissons and full equipment for a hard campaign In the field, six officers and 80 men of Battery A of the Oregon National Guard will leave on the 8 o'clock train this morning for nine days of target practice and artil lery maneuvers at Seaside. The battery will pitch tents on the beach near Tillamook Head. A big target will be placed on the top of this ridge, and from a distance of about 4600 feet the battery lads will try their skill at plunking shells through the center of It. When not shooting with the big guns or working out battery tactics in the field, officers and men will practice with pis tols. Medals will be given for the best shooters In this order: Marksman, first; expert, second, and sharpshooter, third. This Is the third successive year that Battery A. all of whose members are Portlanders. has gone to Seaside for its annual encampment and maneuvers. The battery will be In charge of Captain H. U. Welch, who has commanded It since 1SS9. and under whose charge it has reached a high 6tate of efficiency. The other offi cers are First Lieutenants Lee M. Clark and Frank L. Randall, Second Lieuten ants John P. krupke and George Ousted, and Surgeon-Lieutenant Dr. Albert Holt.
