13 THE 3IORXTSTG OREGOXIAX, FRIDAY, AUGUST 6, 1909. r FOOD GETS SCARCE Effect of Swedish Strike Is Felt by Ail Classes. 300,000 ARTISANS IDLE Soldiers Take Charge of Milk Snp , ply, and Also Goard All Funerals No Violence Is Reported. STOCKHOLM. Aug. 6. Although Stock holm has been quiet tonight, except for everal minor demonstrations by mobs of ttrlkera. It Is believed this situation repre sents merely the calm before the storm. The ranks of the strikers are being aufrmented hourly and the temper both of the strikers and of the inhabitants of the city is hourly increasing- Serious trouble at any moment is feared. Three hundred thousand men are now Idle, the number being about one-sixth the popula tion. The (rovmment Is preparing for any contingency. Additional troops have been ordered to Stockholm and the streets to night are full of clattering army wagons arriving with supplies from the farming flistrlcts. Hunger Is Felt. Within the city the pinch of hunger Is beginning to be felt. The bread supply Is nearly exhausted and because of the strike of slaughterers, the supply of meat Is also running low. Prices have risen to heights that almost preclude the poorer classes buying food. Thousands of the poor are living almost entirely on the fish they are able to catch. The Norwegian laborers already have donated $40,900 to the strike fund, and are making further collections for the cause. The members of the Danish unions have promised to contribute a percentage of their weekly wages as long as the lockout lasts, and collections are being taken up In Finland for the strikers. Troops Supervise Milk- The authorities have taken charge of the milk supply of the city, and soldiers are distributing milk In limited quantities and supervising the sale from milkcars at the railroad stations. The deliveries of Ice have ceased. This Is especially trying, as the weather is unusually hot. Paupers from the state poor house have been enlistl to replace the striking grave-diggers and undertakers, and in stead of hearses, stretchers ara being usid to carry corpses through the streets to the cemeteries. The funerals proceed under military escort. The authorities contend that last night they frustrated an attempt to blow up the gas works with dynamite. A gun boat has been stationed opposite the gas works, and no bo&ifi are allowed to pass between it and the shore. A battalion of grenadiers from Lln koplng and a detachment of 250 men from the VestergotLand Regiment have been ordered Into Stockholm. At Goten burg work at all the slaughter-houses has come to an end. and the general strike committee has called upon the rail road men and the printers to Join the movement.
