The light and anbeequent shooting oc
curred ahortly after 1 o'clock this after
noon. Just aa the prisoners In the Jenl
tentlary Jute mill were going to work.
' The two convicts. It Is aald by prison
officials, had quarreled several days ago
over matters connected iwlth their work
In the Jute mill, and when they met this
afternoon Immediately started fighting,
attempting to atab each other with scis
sors used by them In their work.
They were warned to desist and. disre
garding the order. Guard Staff fired at
the struggling combatants, with the in
tention, he afterwards stated, to merely
wound Allen, who seemed to be the as
gressor. The bullet struck Read In the
right arm. Inflicting a severe, though not
dangerous wound, and entered Allen's
right breast, causing almost Instant
death.
Allen was serving a M years' sentence
for burglary commlttted in Spokane
County two years ago. Read came to
the penitentiary two years ago from
Yakima County to serve a 14-year term
for assault to commit robbery.
An Investigation of the shooting by the
Coroner and the Prosecuting Attorney
this afternoon resulted In the exoneration
of Guard Stan of all blame.

Durtng the last 1J hours the barometer
r.aa fallen slightly In .the North Pacific
States and decidedly In Nevada. Light
how-era have occurred In Southern and
Eastern Oregon and at scattered places In
Washington and Idaho. Heavy showers
have fallen In portions of the Willamette
Valley. It Is much cooler east of the Cas
cade Mountains and In ths Interior of
Northern California. The temperature has
risen ailghtly la the Willamette Valley
notwithstanding which It Is still cooat
than usual In that section
The Indications are for generally fair
weather Tuesday except In Southern Idaho
where the conditions are favorable for
