It Is aald by prison officials, had quarreled several days ago over matters connected iwlth their work In the Jute mill, and when they met this afternoon Immediately started fighting, attempting to atab each other with scis sors used by them In their work. They were warned to desist and. disre garding the order. Guard Staff fired at the struggling combatants, with the in tention, he afterwards stated, to merely wound Allen, who seemed to be the as gressor. The bullet struck Read In the right arm. Inflicting a severe, though not dangerous wound, and entered Allen's right breast, causing almost Instant death. Allen was serving a M years' sentence for burglary commlttted in Spokane County two years ago. Read came to the penitentiary two years ago from Yakima County to serve a 14-year term for assault to commit robbery.
