This atreet. he says, was torn up for

made, and now It neither kept clean, nor

have been working In the cause of tem
perance In Ohio, and who have been the
chief factors In causing the greater part
of that state to go dry. will speak in
Portland churches tomorrow. Mr. Baker
will speak at the First Presbyterian
Church In the afternoon and Mr. Wheeler
will occupy the rostrum of the Centenary
Methodist Episcopal Church In the morn
ing. "Mr. Baker will also deliver addresses
In the Taylor-Street Methodist Episcopal
Church In the morning and at the White
Temple at night. Mr. Baker is the Na
tional superintendent of the Anti-Saloon
League and Mr. Wheeler ia superintend
ent of the Ohio Antl-Staloon League. Be
sides engaging in temperance legislation
In Ohio. Mr. Wheeler has defended tem
perance laws before the United States
Supreme Court.
Many Streets Obstructed. Complaint
Is made that the contractors building the
sewer system at Sellwood have too many
streets In that suburb obstructed. Many
sewers have been laid In the streets,
which have not been covered, and these
cannot be used. Business men 1n Sell
wood would like the contractors to com
plete these streets so they can be used.
As sewers are being laid on nearly all
the streets, tlie present method of leaving
unfinished many of the sewer branches
causes Inconvenience.- However, the con
tractors are pushing Jorward the work
with all possible energy. All the sewers
of this system are being laid in the mid
dle of tlie streets, which will make It
convenient In making connections.
Soldier Reaches Depths. John
Clarey. a veteran of the Spanish-American
War. was convicted in Municipal
Court yesterday morning of striking Mrs.
Lixzle Smith, while both were Intoxicated.
Attorney A. Hansen, who served In the
same company with tlarey, defended the
man and urged that he be discharged In
view of his services to his country. Judge
Bennett gave him the line limit of the
law IMl Assistant District Attorney Hen
nessey arraigned the man severely for
his cruelty and drew a sharp contrast
between his war record and the depths
to which he has descended since nis non
orable discharge.
Divorce Inquired About. County
Clerk Fields is In receipt of a letter from
Mr. and Mrs. Jonathan Moors, of Bagley,
Minn.. In which they ask whether or not
(ieorge Laidley has saaured a divorce,
The records of Multnomah County do not
show that he has. The Moors say Laidley
married their daughter, who Is now Mrs.
Ijirinds. Laidley. but deserted her last
Fall saying he had secured a divorce in
July, ISO?. The Moors give his address
as 2S4 Clay street, but say also be Is in
the hospital. He Is said to have a son
Walter Laidley. 12 years old. His par-
enta-in-law also say he has married
again.
Stolen Auto Recovered. The auto
mobile owned by Dr. Oeorge F. Wilson.
which was reported to have been stolen
from the curb In front of the Arlington
Club Thirsday night, was recovered by
the police early yesterday morning at
West Park and Stark streets. No trace
of the thieves has been secured. It Is
thought It na taken by hoodlums to
participate In a. "joy-ride" as Its con
dition indicated rough usage.

Ctmrad and Earl Collander, yotiths whose
ages range from 18 to 25 years, were ar
raigned in Justice Olson's court yester
day afternoon on a complaint sworn to
by Ferdinand McGee, charging them with
a statutory offense upon a 13-year-old
girl residing with her parents in Arleta.
The case was continued until Thursday
upon the request f the authorities.
According to the story of the officials
who made the arrest of the youths, the
crime committed is mot revolting. While
neither of the prisoners pleaded guilty in
court, yet reluctantly confessed their
guilt. Intrigue, debauchery and de
ception are alleged to have been adopted,
resulting in the girl's downall and pres
ent condition.
Conrad, who Is 25 years old and pro
prietor of a photograph gallery at Arlota,
the point where the crime was committed
veveral days ago. when pressed with the
charge by Constable Wagner, admitted
he had inveigled the girl Into a rear com
partment of nix establishment with the
promise of a dozen photo postals. The
other three of the quartet are said to
have enticed the girl into a rear room of
a nickelodeon theater and there, after
plying her with drink, compelled her to
disrobe and perform for their amuse
ment. Owing to the gravity of the crimes
charged against the youths, the authori
ties are hesitating In meting out justice
until a thorough investigation has been
made. It is intimated that everal other
youths at Arleta are Incriminated and
will subsequently be taken into custody.
Since the girt s downfall has been made
known to the authorities, she has been
taken into custody and Is. now confined
In the Home of the Good Shepherd.
All of the accused, except Conrad,
who mortgaged his photograph estab
lishment and succeeded in securing the
$1500 bail required, were remanded to the
County Jan.
It is thought the victim will be In con
dition to appear In court next Thursday.

DELEGATES TO GO EAST
I.ocnl Members Will Make Strong
Campaign at Pittsburg for Gath
ering That Will Bring 50,000
People to This City.
Under the slogan. "Portland In 1911,"
members of the Christian churches of
Portland are organizing; a large dele
gation to go to Pittsburg in October
to attend the annual General Mission
ary Christian. Convention which con
venes October 11.
The movement is under the leader
ship of Rev. J. F. Ghormley of the Cen
tral Christian Church, who has in hand
the matter of securing rates and spe
cial cars.
Arrangements have already been
closed with the Harriman lmes where
by special cars will be provided for the
Oregon delegation over the O- R. & N.,
Short Line. Union Pacific, Northwestern
and Wabash. A rate of one fare for
the round trip as far as Chicago has
been secured from the Harriman lines,
making the rate to that point and re
turn J72.50. '
Rev. Mr.' Ghormley yesterday said
that It was difficult at this time, to es
timate the number that will go to
Pittsburg from Oregon but that he
hoped to have two sleepers well filled
when the train to which they are at
tached crosses the state line into Idaho.
If the Oregon delegation succeeds in
its endeavors, it will bring to Portland
one of the largest conventions of 1911.
The secretaries of the convention at
Pittsburg estimate that there will be
an attendance this year of more than
fco.000. The convention embraces both
the United States and Canada and
brings missionaries of the Christian de
nomination from thr fields In all parts
of the world.
No attempt will be made to get the
convention for Portland In 1910, as such
a movement is considered hopeless. It
requires an early campaign to land so
big a gathering and Portland Is going
Into the field as early as any other city
for the 1911 convention.
For the convention next year several
cities are strong candidates, among
them being Des Moines. Wichita, Phila
delphia. Boston and Washington. It is
a question whether the convention In
1910 will come to th Middle West or
go to the far East. The Oregon dele
gation will go to Pittsburg prepared to
make the best combination possible on
the 1910 convention In order to secure
support for the gathering In 1911.
Tn this movement for Portland tn
1911. the local workers have had as
surances from delegates In Washing
ton and California that both states will
lend all their efforts to Portland'ssuc
cess. From Oregon It Is expected that
about 50 will s:o to Pittsburg, the ma
jority of whom will be from Portland.
The rate made by the Harriman lines
is effective October 4 and the. tickets
are good for the return trip until No
vember SO. '

WORLD TOUR NEARLY ENDS
Fred Zimmerman, Famous Oars
man, Expected Home Tonight.
Fred Zimmerman, son of F. Zimmer
man. 355 East Twenty-first street, is
due to arrive in Portland tonight from
Seattle, after a six months' touring
trip around the world. Fred Zimmer
man rowed stroke oar on the famous
Portland crew that went to Boston in
1906, and was also a member of the
Stanford University crew for four
years.
He left San Francisco February 16
and sailed from there to Honolulu. Ho
remained two weeks each in China. Ja
pan. India. Egypt and Switzerland.
While at Zurich. Switzerland, he met
Paul Smith, who formerly rowed No. 3
on the Portland crew. Zimmerman will
probably go to San Francisco in two
or three weeks to engage in business
there.
