Cho Wing: Iuck Recounts Trip to Portland in Hold of Steamer From Far East. Chow Fat and Kong Chan, members of the Oriental liner Arabia's crew, who were arrested Friday charged with smuggling a fellow countryman, Cho Wing Duck, into this port, had their preliminary hearing yesterday before 1'nlted States Commissioner G. H. Marsh. The examination was conducted by Assistant United States District-Attorney Walter H. Evans. Acting Ger man Consul Paul Cremer and his at torney. J. C. Veazie, were present, as were also the Chinese Consul, Moy Bark Hln. Captain Neumann, of the Arabia, and Inspector Barbour. All the testimony was given through an interpreter. The defendants entered pleas of not guilty. -iTje only witness against them was Cho Duck, who told how he arranged with them to get into this country. The witness said he met Chow Fat in Hong Kong in April and expressed to him a wish to come to this country. The sailor, he said, agreed to bring him here for 2470, f 0 of which amount, he declared, was turned over then, the balance to be collected from one of Cho Wing's friends In Hong ong on the return trlD. They did not leave their place of confinement during the entire voyage, tnelr rood being lowered to them in a bucket through a hatch. Once a day rice and water were given them and this was their means of reckoning the time. On arrival of the ship in Portland, Cho Wing and his companions were kept in the stern of me sieamer until nignt, wnen tney were lowered into a boat and rowed to shore. They were told where the Chin ese quarters were, and warned not to ask for any directions from white peo ple. Cho Wing was unable to keep up with the others and they became sepa rated. The two defendants showed little concern in the proceedings. Cho Wing told his story, straightforwardly. He has said that he wants to go back home. The hearing will be resumed this morning. SKELETON IS SHOWN TO JURY Damage Suit Against Tr. O. B. Estes Is Continued. The damage suit of E. M. Brooks the Wahkiakum, Wash., farmer, agaist Dr. O. B. Estes, of Astoria, was re sumed yesterday afternoon before Judge Bean. Dr. George F. Wilson, Dr. J. R. Wetherbee and Dr. L..H. Hamilton testified as to their methods of treat ment in fractures of the ankle, similar to tha plaintiff's Injury. Much of the session was devoted to explaning to the Jury by means of a skeleton the struc ture of the bones of the foot and ankle, and the effect of Injuries and their treatment.
