CENTRAL POINT, Or., Juna 14.
(Special.) Fire, started through chil
dren playing; with matches, caused the
loss of a barn and four dwellings this
afternoon and for a time threatened
the entire town.
The opera-house, livery stable and
several other buildlngrs caught fire from
the sparks, but each time the fires
were extinguished before serious dam
age was done. A stiff wind was blow
ing and when It appeared that the con
flagration would prove a serious one
the Med ford fire department was called
upon, and responded by arriving on a
special train with chemical engines.
Central Point Is entirely without water
protection, and many of Medford's citl
sens came in automobiles to lend as
sistance. Only the most herolo efforts
saved the city.
Ed. Whiteside was painfully, though
not seriously injured, by a fall through
a roof while fighting the flames.

WEATHER CONDITIONS.
A trough of low nressure extends from
British Columbia south to Nevada and the
weather is unsettled and threatening over
the greater portion of th9 North Pacific
States. No rain of consequence has. how
ever, occurred. It Is decidedly warmer In
Eastern Oregon. Eastern Washington and
Idaho and the temperatures over the Upper
Columbia River drainage area are 12 de
grees above the normal.
The Indications are for showers and
thunderstorms Tuesday In Eastern Oregon,
Eastern Washington and Idaho with lower
temperatures. In Western Oregon and
Western Washington local rains, followed by
fair weather, are expected.
THE . RIVER.
Owing to the change to warmer woather
esst of the Cascade Mountains all stations
report a slight rise in the river since yes
terday. At Lewiston the rise was only
OTne-tenth of a foot, and at Umatilla the
rise was the same. The river at Portland
will remain nearly on a stand for the next
three or four days.
