Camant on "Irish Land Reform." Hen-
nessy Murphy will preside and Introduce
the speaker. Some of the prominent
Irishmen of the city will be on the plat
form. St. Stephen's Orchestra, the Ore
gon Quartet and the Sacred Heart Choris
ter Society will give a, number of selec
tions. Mr. MeCamant has given the sub
ject much study. The addrasa will begin
at 8 o'clock.
"Portland Woman Safb. Portland
friends) of Miss BmHy Rlohter were re
lieved to hear that the disorders in and
around the city of Hadjin. in Adana
Province. Turkey, have) been suppressed
and that the safety of the missionaries
in that district has: been assured. Miss
Richter formerly lived in Chicago and
with other women was sent to Turkey
last September by the American Board
of Foreign Missions. Several thousand
Armenian refugees gathered at Hadjin
when the Moslem hordes began their
work of slaughter and devastation and
the lives of Miss Richter and the other
missionaries were thus endangered.
Mat Abbasi?! Clean-Up Dat. The
United Bast Side Push Clubs yesterday
received an invitation to hold a. meeting
in CJentral East Portland about the mid
dle of May. from c. A. Bigelow, presi
dent of the East Stide Business Men's
Club. Time and place of meeting will
be fixed later. Addresses will be delivered
on the new charter to be voted on at the
June election, the Rose Festival and other
topics. One of the objects of this meet
ing will be to fix a day for a general
cleanlng-up all over the Bast Side. All
civic clubs axe Invited to come to this
meeting.
W. C Bristol to sbak. "Govern
ment as Tt Is and as It Ought to Be." is
the subject of an address to be delivered
by W. C. Bristol, ex-United States res
trict Attorney, at the People's Forum to
morrow night at S o'clock. Mr. Bristol
s a deep student of social economics and

Eastern Star Plans Programme. The
members of Corinthian Chapter, No. 64,
Oregon Eastern Star, are arranging for a
literary and musical entertainment to be

Tjisobets and Is "Whipped. Failure of
M. lM. Clemenger, a real estate agent, to
ta.ke advantage of three minutes allowed
him by Felix Fruhof in. which to leave
the latter's office in the Abington build
ing, resulted in a severe drubbing for
Clemenger yesterday forenoon and later
in the arrest of Fruhpf. Clemenger went
into Fruhof's office to call for a letter
he had 'been informed was awaiting him
there, as he formerly worked for Fruhof.
Fruhof ordered him out. Clemenger paid
no attention and Fruhof gave him three
minutes 'in which to leave and at the
end of that time attacked him. Clemenger
came out second best in the encounter but
he told the . police, later, that Fruhof
utilized a choir as well as both hands
and both fet. His assailant was held
for trial under Jion bail.

RILEY BECOMES SERGEANT
Promoted When Sergeant Baty Is
Madet Captain.
Policeman -Harry Riley wa promoted
to the position of sergeant yesterday
afternoon by the City Executive Board,
to fill a, vacancy made by advancing
Harry Ttllry. A ho Becomes Sergeant
in Police lepartment.
Detective Sergeant Baty to captain.
These appointments have been expected
for some time.
Captain Baty has been a member of
the police department for more than
six years, serving as patrolman, patrol
sergeant and detective-sergeant. He
has been in charge of the secret service
branch for nearly two years.
Sergeant Riley has been in the police
service of the city for four years, as a
patrolman. He is a popular and well
known officer, and has had similar ex
perience In San Francisco and other
places. He has been crossing officer
at Third and Morrison streets for a
long time, and has also served as ser-geant-at-arms
In the Council chamber
for the past 18 months, always with
perfect satisfaction to his superior offi

miracles of violin art, and when he was
the soloist, recently, for the Thomas Or
chestra in Chicago he played the Tschal
kowski 'concerto with so little trouble
over Its stupendous difficulties that it was
almost staggering to his audience of mu
sical enthusiasts. The Evening Post said
of him:
"Elman is a violinist by the gift of the
gods. He has learned in this, his youth,
things which veterans are battling for In
vain. He has acquired a mastery over
the mechanical difficulties of the instru
ment that is, in its completeness, almost
unbelievable. But Elman has gone fur
ther than' the pyrotechny of his art. Such
ravishing tone as he puts forth has not
been heard in-many years from others of
his craft. That art so amazing should
have evoked the maddest enthusiasm
from his hearers was only natural."

ner Changes Hands.
The interest of Mrs. Adolpb Jacobs In
the deal for the southwest corner of
Sixth and Alder streets, negotiated with
the ladd Estate Company by Ben Selling,
has been acquired by other investors. C.
S. Moore. ex-Treasurer of Oregon, and
M. Blum, of San Francisco, have taken
over the Jacobs interest.
Mr. ' Selling said yesterday that, from
preliminary estimates furnished. the
building is to cost the associates be
tween tSOO.000 and $350,000, but that
nothing definitely has been decided as to
the height of the structure. It has been
decided, however, to build a steel in
terior building and make it a strictly
Class A building.

Morris Schmits. . of 2"5 Grant street,
will be sent to the Multnomah County
rockpile to save his life. Schmltz is de
termined to kill himself. He drank chlo
roform Wednesday night and was taken
to Good Samaritan Hospital, where his
life was saved. He is convalescing, but
he declares his purpose to commit suicide
is unshaken and that he is determined to
take his life as soon as discharged from
the hospital.
City Physician Ztegler is equal
ly determined that Schmltz shall
continue living. After a talk with
the fellow yesterday, he found that
Scbmlts could not be dissuaded from his
intention and so proceeded to arrange to
have Schmits restrained from committing
suicide until his present morbidness shall
pass away. Believing that fresh air.
plenty of exercise and wholesome living
would accomplish that end. Dr. Ziegler
called on Municipal Judge Van Zante dur
ing the day and made arrangements for
Schmits'- removal to the rockpile.
Schmltz is but 26 years old. in vigorous
physical condition and has no good reason
for wanting to die, except "the melan
choly viewpoint he has cultivated. His
stomach is yet badly ulcerated from the
poison he drank Wednesday .night.
"Tou needn't think I can be kept from
dying." he told Dr. Ziegler. "I will find
a way. Life, it means nothing. I do not
want to live, and so I will not. What is
there in living, anyway. It's nothing but
sorrow and disappointment, and In death
I can forget all and find rest. It was not
my fault I failed the other time. The
next time I will succeed."
Schmltz will be taken to the rockpile
this week and will be kept at work there
under surveillance until he sees the folly
and weakness of his conduct. Beside get
ting the advantage of wholesome living
and hard work there, the authorities ar
gue that he will be so overjoyed at re
saining nis iiDerly as to view life as
something worth living, after all. In
order to make his commitment regular,
a charge of attempting suicide will be
lodged against him.

Mr. and Mrs. John Gdll and Miss Elsa
Gill returned to Portland Wednesday
after a three months' trip to the
Hawaiian Islands.
J. C. Bracher left yesterday on a busi
ness trip East. He will stop in Chicago,
Pittsburg and New York, and will be
gone about two months.
Ellery Sedgwick, editor of the At
lantic Monthly, Is in Portland for the
purpose of familiarizing himself with
conditions in the Northwest. Mr. Sedg
wick registered at the Portland and
expressed himself as being well pleased
with the city.
R. Caughey, of 93S East Couch street,
has received word that his brother. Dr.
John Lyon Caughey, pastor of the Harlem
Presbyterian Church, New Vork City,
will visit Portland during the Rose Festi
val. Dr. Caughey has many friends in
Portland and it is passible Chat he may
fill the pulpit in one of the local churches
while here.'
Rev. vf. o. Forbes, of this city,
who- for nearly eight years has been
doing missionary work for the Presby
terian Church in Central Washington and
Idaho, has been called to superintend the
home End Sunday school missionary work
of the city and Presbytery of Seattle
Dr. Forbes was in the city yesterday en
route to Lewiston. Idaho, and thence to
Tokio Parasols. '
