ALL GRADES HIGHER j Wheat Advances in Spite of Government Figures. BLUESTEM SOLD AT $1.25 Oats and Barley Strong With an Upward Tendency Hay Stead ier Because of Light Arrivals. Country Produce Active. Wheat continues to advance steadily In the local market In spite of the remarkable figures given out by the Government as farmers' holdings In this section of the country. That there Is nothing like the quantity represented, but Instead, an actual shortage la plainly Indicated by the tactics of millers In all the Coast states who are continually bidding up prices to get needed supplies. Bluestem, the supply of which Is almost gone, has in the past few days sold at $1.20, and one small lot Is reported to have brought $1.25. Club wheat was quoted yes terday at $1.10 and $1.0S was offered for red Russian. The firmness of the oats market has not abated a particle, notwithstanding the enormous supply the Government says -exists on the Coast. The local demand la strong enough, with the scanty offerings, to keep the market firm at $39' a ton. Barley la likewise strong at $30 a ton. There is a steadier feeling in the hay mar ket, as receipts in the last week have been unusually light. Dealers do not think there Is much opportunity to do business with &an Francisco, although prices are exceed ingly high there. Timothy could be laid down at San Francisco at a good profit under the prevailing quotations, but con sumers there are not used to this variety of forage, preferring grain hay, of which but little 1s to be had here. Bid and asked prloes were posted at the Board of Trade as follows: WHEAT. Bid. Asked. March $1.0 $1.03 April LOT 1.09 OATS. Only Two Cars of It&nanna Coming Next Week. Receipts of California produce were light er yesterday and the market cleaned up well. Two cars of fancy celery and one car of mixed vegetables, came in. Except for Mexican tomatoes there was no oversupply of anything and prices In general were firm. Two cars of oranges were due last night. Only two cars of bananas will be In the next shipment. There were no new developments In the potato market, which was moderately firm on a normal California Inquiry. Onions are moving at former prices. EGGS ARE WEAKER AM) LOWER. Local Retailers Cautions In Their Baying. Butter Firm. The egg market was slow and weak. Bhlpptng orders were not heavy and local retailers were cautious in their buying. front-street dealers quoted 22 and 224 cents. The upply Is better than It was last week, but will have to Increase considerably before the market Is affected. California Prune Market. The California prune market la difficult to quote, according to the California Fruit Grower. It says: "In view of the absence of large Inquiry and the Instability of prices that has been In evidence recently, quota tions In this line are low with the exception of the large sizes. Forties are being held at Increased premiums over figures that have been ruling, and specification, calling for any large proportion of 40s In an order are In most eases only accepted at a stiff premium." LITTLE INTEREST SHOWN Copper Industrials Advance in Spite of Bearish Trade Statistics. Proposed Tariff Changes Affect Sentiment. NEW YORK. March 10. The stock mar ket continues refactory to the efforts of pro fessional operators to move it in either di rection. The plain inference, of course. Is that everybody concerned In the actual ownership and transfer of holdings of stocks is practically abstaining from operations. The dealings today showed some slight In crease in animation and the professional operators showed some daring in trying to extend the decline, which was set in mo tion late yesterday. A leading incentive for the early selllnr was a belief that the monthly statistics of the Copper Producers Association would reveal an additional accumulation of sur plus. The figures confirmed the unfavorable forecast, but prices of the copper Indus trials promptly advanced. An. addition of over 08.O00.OO0 pounds to the unsold stocks of refined copper in the United states was shown as a result of operations ln Feb ruary, whereas the addition during January was only 21.SuO.O0O pounds. Some of the suppositions current as to the proposed changes In the import duties which are to be embodied in the new tariff bill were cited as harmful to prospects for values. These were accompanied by Inti mations by some corporation managers that reduction of duties would necessitate re duction of wages. An unfavorable impres sion was made by the average decrease ln gross earnings of railroads for the last week In February compared with last year, although allowance might be made for an extra day for last year in the comparison, owing to the leap year. Some influence on the turn of the price movement w'as the acqultmi of the Stand ard OH Company In the retrial of the case which led to the $20,000,000 fines of the company. As this result was rather clearly foreshadowed yesterday. Its effect on the market was moderate. The rally was poor ly held at the lant. Bonds were irregular. Total sales, par value. $2,928,000. United State. 2s coupon advanced m per cent on call. CLOSING STOCK QUOTATIONS. Closing I.OW.
