Object to Direct Sales. One of tha most Important of the dis cussions which took place was on the question of wholesalers selling direct to consumers. The disposition was to call a spade a spado, and names and In stances of dealers who had sold to con sumers were -riven. Wherever this prac tice is round, it was declared tnat trie retailers should notify the wholesaler, nnd that such practices should be gen erally made public and protested against by the retailers. Not a syllatlo as to what would be done by retailers (In case of a contlnu ance of this practice was Indulged In by any wholesaler) was mentioned, or even '..lnted at. But It was evident that pub licity was to be -riven to those whole saler who did sell to conTumers direct. The result of such Dubllelty will be de termined by after events and the mys terious workings of Providence. All Jobbers, paint and oil men, hard ware and Implement men, tent and awn ing; makers, stove houses, cordafre and rope manufacturers, wire rope and wire fence men represented at the meetlDjr passed a resolution lrdorslns; the John son road bill, and convict labor bill and the appropriation bill. lAst of Firms Kepresented. HUNDRED THOUSAND OFFER UP Jeffries Most Give Sparring Ex hibits to Get Money. SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 20. James J. Jeffries, the retired heavyweight cham pion, who is filling a theatrical engage ment here, has received an offer of $100. 000 for 33 weeks of sparring exhibitions on an Eastern vaudeville circuit. The offer was made by Sam Wheeler, the fight promoter of St. Louis. Jeffries still refuses to admit that he has any Inten tions of attempting to wrest the cham pionship from Jack Johnson, but the be lief Is growing stronger each diy that the retired champion will again be seen In the ring. Although a trifle fat, Jef ries shows all the speed that made him the wonder of the heavyweight division during his active fighting days, and his sparring partner, Sam Herger. Is author ity for the statement that the big fight er's blows have not lost their steam. SALE SAMPLE SUITS. Clearance sale prices on sample line of new Spring suits, coats and waists. Johnny Haley, of Chicago, the 12B- pound amateur champion wrestler of the Middle West, arrived In Portland yester day afternoon, and will commence work. lng out this afternoon to limber himself tip for his match with Edgar E. Frank at theMultnomah Club tomorrow night. naiey is a member of the Illinois Ath- teuc hud, or Chicago, and has won a large number of matches for that Insti tution. He la a good-looking, stocky mue leuow. "I guess I am np against the hardest man since I started in the game." said HaJoy last night, "but that don't bother me much, for I always look upon every contestant as a hard man. Frank has beaten some good men and he Is in per fect condition for a hard go, which ought to make our contest a good one for the spectators. I hope to win. and really expect to do so. for I have never been defeated yet. and I don't think Mr. Frank has had the actual wrestling experience necessary to win. The confidence possessed by Haley In himself seems unfaltering. He thinks ha can beat any wrestler of his weight In trie world, and as young as he Is, he seems not the least feazed at coming all the way from Chicago, unaccompanied, to meet an utter stranger In a strange town. Haley will work out with either In structor O'Connell or some of the Mult nomah wrestlers this afternoon. He Is a trifle stiff from his long ride on the cars, and has accepted the offer of the club, which tendered him the use of the gymnasium during his stay In Portland. All the ambitious young grapplers of the ciud are anxious to see the Chlcagoan in action; and Ji Is a safe bet that the gym win pe crowded this afternoon dunng the time the visitor Is at work. Haley says he was at weight when he left Chicago. and believes that he can get back to the mark in a few hours hard work. Edgar Frank worked out splendidly last night and says he never felt better In his life. He expects to defeat the Chicago boy, and his many friends are banking on his success, for they claim he has Improved wonderfully In the last few months. He la faster than ever be fore, and has benefited greatly by the work he has had with Instructor O'Connell. The programme will start promptly at 8 o'clock, when the first of the two pre liminary matches will be pulled off. This bout will be between Swinney and Mose, while the second preliminary will be be tween Otto Ott and Fanske. HOTEL PERKINS Fifth and Washington Sts.
