(Special.) deetings have been held - this week at Mackshnrtc and Molalla by F. M Swift, of Portland, who is promoting an electric railway system into the interior of Clackamas County. While Swift does not plan to finance the project himself, he Is in tonch with men who are ready and williror. It Is said, to advance the necessary capital to construct a railway from gome point near Orenon City to Scotts Mills, passim; through Heaver Creek. Mulino; Liberal, Molalla and Mar Uiiam, - The company will be known as the Ore gon "City, Beaver Creek t Molalla Rail way, and is incorporated for H. 000.000, divided Into lO.OuO shares at 1100 each. Owners of property alone the proposed route will be asked to subscribe for stock to the amount of JIOO.OOO and are respond ing liberally. Five thousand dollars was subscribed at the 'Macksbtn-R meeting... Monday. Deputy Sheriff Dajley returned today from Oakesdale. whera.he .has been aid ing J. A. Wood, of Walla Walla. In getting stolen horses, taken a year ago from his Wallowa Valley ranch In Oregon. Wood fays about 20 horses were stolen and Bold In Whitman County. . Wood also lost 73 head" of .pure-bred Hereford cattle to the alleged Camas Prairie-Idaho-stock swindlers, who'bought aoout jjho.wo worth of stock here.. The four men who operated .were Major Ferris. Both these propositions were settled fa vorably by nubile meetings held last night In the City JlaJI. The telephone proposition was first brought up at a meeting of subscribers, presided over by Councilman John R. Kelso. It was re ported that the full amount of the stock required. I250O. to Incorporate and erect the plant, had been subscribed, and 100 telephone had been signed for. A com mittee of seven was then appointed to Incorporate. The company will be formed and controlled by the people of Mllwau kle and tb system will connect with Ave trunk tinea of the Home Telephone Com pany. A representative of the Pacific Taiepbona V Telerraeb. Company was present with a proposition, but the people had already signed up for the other sys tem. Oak Grove also had a representa tive present. A switch will be maintained in MUwaukie and the cost per telephone will range between 11.60 to J2 a month. Construction will start at once. - At the bank meetlng'it was announced that J7500 of the $10,000 capital stock had been subscribed by the people of Mil waukle, which Is more than ' had been asked. This insures establishment of a state hank In MUwaukie.- The Incorpora tion of the company, to be controlled by the people of Mllwaukle. was authorized. Directors wfll then be elected and Im mediate steps will be taken to establish the bank. A temporary building will probably be rented until a fire-proof structure can be erected on Main street. CHRISTMAS MASS PLANNED Midnight Services to Be Held In Vancouver Catholic Church. VANCOUVER, Wash.. Dec. .23. (Spe cial.) Midnight mass will be celebrated Christmas Eve at St. James Cathedral. Father Lawrence, of the Church of the Holy Rosary, of Portland, will preach the sermon. There will be special music and the benediction of the blessed sacrament. Father Xerwllghen officiating. The cathedral has recently been fres coed and several new oil paintings added. the work being Just completed In time for the special Christmas services. FERRY UPON SOUND Milwaukee Road May Buy Co lumbia River Boat. PICK UP CARS FROM MILLS Greek Drowned Shooting Ducks. ARLINGTON. Or., Dec. 23. (Special.) Nick Miller, a Greek section hand, was drowned In the Columbia River about eight miles below this place yesterday while shooting ducks. He attempted to reach down into the water to pull out a duck and fell In. A lone Indian was on the hill near Miller and saw him fall Into the water and attempted -to rescue him, but could not do so. The body was found by other Greeks and brought here for burial. Priest Rapids Road Is Begun. PASCO, Wash., Dec. : 23. (Special.) Authentic reports from up-river are to the-effect that the Priest Rapids Traction Company has begun actual operations. Men and teams are being hired daily and yesterday a large supply of provisions left Pasco. The steam equipment will be replaced by an electric line during the Summer. The grade Is an easy one. The road will extend from Kennewlck to Priest Rapids, tapping the richest fruit belt In the Columbia River -Valley. Vessel Can Carry 25 Cars "and Plan Will Be to. Make .Trips to Various Mills Situated Away From . Builroad Centers,. PEATTLK, Wash., Dec. 23. (Special.) The Northern Paclllc ferryboat Ta coma, which has been carrying train across the Columbia for years, may be brought around to Puget Sound and used by the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul as a car ferry between Puget Sound - ports picking up loaded freight cars at various mills and Isolated communities and delivering them to one of the C. M. & St. P. Sound terminals. Several weeks ago railroad men were given an inkling of the road's plan The ferry' can handle from 21 to 2 cars and can make a trip about tli Sound covering all mill points within four or five days. The St. Paul will thus be able to be come an active . competitor with all other lines at all Sound ports and save a large amount of construction. Scores of mills are located off the rail lines, and these can be. kept tin. touch with the railroads by means of tlie ferry. land.-- All the present business portion of the city as far east on iMain as the new Northern Pacillc depot and Federal build ing site is included In the. area. to be paved, 54,000 square yards all told, at the approximate cost of 4150,000. An old-fashioned Christmas cu torn will be observed at St. Paul's Luther an Church In this city on Christmas. An early matin service will be held in the church at 6 o'clock, the audience-room being lit with candles suspended from the celling. But the particularly unique feature will be the call to worship by several cornets from the church steeple 10 minutes before the service begins. Expectation Is It Will Leave Waya In About Month, "When Elaborate Launching 19 Planned. VANCOUVER, Wash., Dec. 23. (Spe cial.) The new Vancouver ferry-boat, which is being built at the shipyards of the St. John Shipbuilding Company, in St. John, Or., and which,, it is expected, will be launched in about a. month, is pronounced by everyone connected with its construction and by the boatmen gen erally along the river, as the best ferry boat ever built on either the Willamette or the Columbia. It is a beauty In out ward appearance, is up-to-date in Its every appointment and equipped with everything that is modern. It will be christened when launched and there will be an appropriate ceremony connected therewith. The name Is not yet definitely decided upon, but it is alto gether likely It will be called the F. L Fuller. ' The ferry is 142 feet in length, with a S-t-foot beam, a depth of 9 feet and a beam over the guard of 55 feet 2 inches. On either aide of the apron at each end of the new ferry there will be passageways for passengers separately railed off, and the teams will go in the center, so that the teams and passengers . will be kept apart and not crowded together as is the case on the old ferry. There will be well-lighted cabins the full length of the boat on each side. These the passengers may enter direct from the passageways and leave them at the other end of the boat, stepping direct ly from the cabin to the railed passage way. The upper deck will accommodate between 400-and 500 and the entire ferry will easily carry 1000 people. It is a side-wheeler, steam-heated and lighted by its own electric plant of about SO amperes. The engine-room is in the center and the teams will pass this room on either side In going from one end to the other. The new ferry is nearly 40 feet longer than the old ferry It will draw 30 Inches of water. The total cost will be about 130,000. MAN QUEERLY DISAPPEARS Schwartz Files on Timber Claim and Is Then Lost Sight Or. ROSEBURG, Or.. Dec. 23. After mak ing final proof on a timber claim before the United States Land Commissioner at Medford, Or., on November 9 last, Ed Schwartz, who owns a 'fruit farm near Protser, Wash., mysteriously disap peared. A search for Schwartz Is now being made by his half-brother, Thomas Henderson, of Aberdeen, S. D., who- ar rived in Roseburg from Medford yester day. After proving up on his claim, Schwartz was to have gone to Prosper Immediately and thenco to Aberdeen. He failed to put In appearance at either place, neither has he been seen In the vicinity of his claim, and his relatives are utterly unable to form any Idea as to his whereabouts.
