The Pan ama Canal will be opened January X 1915. according to an official com munication received yesterday by ' the California Promotion Committee from Joseph Bueklln Bishop, secretary of the Canal Commission. The statement in part is as follows: "There has been excavated from the line of the canal since the Americans took control about W,000,000 cubic yards. This Is as near as can be calcu lated at the present time and is about one-third of tho entire excavation nec essary to complete -the work. ' Of. this 6S.nno.O( cubic yards. about 65,000.000 has been removed during the last three years. In 190S. down to November 1, nearly 31,000,X0 cubic yaras were re moved, and the total for this year will oot be far from S7,OW,000 cubic yards. This will bring the grand total of American excavation to about 0,000,001) cubic yards." Fulton Seeks a Pardon. WASHINGTON, Dec. 22, Senator Ful ton called on the President today in be half of Otto Schumann, of Portland, a sailor on the torpedoboat destroyer Ro wan, who is serving one year's imprison ment for a verbal attack on the ship's sentry after having trouble with him. Schumann deserted, but -ater surrendered. President Roosevelt expressed interest in the case and promised it should be given consideration. Deny Wage Increase, COLUMBUS, O., Dec. 22.
