HAWTHORKE-AVEKUB IMPROVEMENT. There are good prospects that Hawthorne avenue will be improved between East Third and East forty-first street with asphalt pavement. It is provided that this pavement shall be laid on a concrete foundation five Inches) thick and stone blocks are required to be placed between the car tracks. The concrete under the rails and tne blocks must be fully six Inches thick. Afl wooden sidewalks are to be relaid. The City Engineer estimates the coat of this improvement at J20O.2U1. It is by far the most Important street im provement projected on the East Side and Mill provide an , Improved street for a large and crowing district, which now extends south from Hawthorne avenue to Division street. A large number of pretentious homes have been built on Hawthorne avenue, and others are under construction. The street Is 70 feet wide. Division street, which parallels Haw thorne avenue wHl also be improved be tween East Tenth and the present city limits, but with crushed rock. Tells About Kingdom or God. At the meeting yesterday of the Presbyterian Ministerial Association, Rev. Harry Leeds read a scholarly paper on "The Nature of the Kingdom of God." Miss Mc Namara. head nurse of the Open Air Sanatorium was Invited to speak at the next meeting on the needs of the tuber cular poor. Volunteers were called for to conduct services at that place next Sun day. Rev. Murdock McLod. of Tacoma, was present and participated In the dis cussion. Resolutions were passed con demning the taking of subscriptions by three persons professing to represent the Nestorian Church. These men have a long list of endorsements and letters in Syriac commending them to the charit ably inclined. It was declared that the .American churches were doing a far better work in Syria than the institu tion represented by the three solicitors. Piirh methods of raising funds were, the ministers declared, to be discouraged. Ljvtcd in Orb-qos 63 y-CA.RH Harvey Northup. who died at his home In Sell wood December 6. had lived In Oregon 83 years. He was 78 years of age, and had lived in Washington County for many years before moving to Portland. The funeral was held In Hillsboro, bis old home. Mr. Northup was born In Whit man County, New York, and crossed the plains to Oregon in 1S46. In 1S52 he was married to Mlaa Sarah Davis, and 13 chil dren were born to them, eight surviving ss follows: Maurice Northup. Corvallia: Edward H. Northup, Glencoe; Mrs. Emma Hichenbottom, Cul de Sac. Idaho; Alonzo Northup. Glencoe: Charles North up. Prescott. Wash.; Fred Northup. Glen coe; Mrs. Sadie Smith. His funeral was held yesterday, the body being Interred in the family lot In the Salem Cemetery. He leaves a son. Carl Nlcklln. and a daughter. Miss Lelo Nlcklln. both of Salem. Vance Mausoleum Completed. The mausoleum built by the Israel Vance estate in Multnomah Cemetery in memory of the pioneer has been com pleted. It is 12x14 feet In slxe, and cost eXOOO. Subscriptions for all periodicals lak-n at GUI's. Lowndes Tries to Shift Guilt. On Information given out yesterday morning by E. A. Lowndes, brought -back from Chicago, his former room-mate. Louis Maurer, was arrested for complicity In passing a forged check. Each is trying to saddle the guilt upon the other. Lowndes Insists that the check was given to him by Maurer, who owed him con siderable money and that he cashed the check at the Meier & Frank store in order to collect the amount due. The forged signature was placed thereon by Maurer, ne says. Maurer admits that he Indorsed the check but says he did so at the solicitation of Lowndes, who asked him to do so as a favor. The police are divided as to who Is telling the truth. Neither of the young men made an effort to conceal the fact that they had tampered with the check, Lowndes even leaving his address behind when he left the city for Chicago. Lowndes was brought back from Chicago by Joe Day, acting as special representative of the state. He reports Lowndes a model prisoner on the trip. Brldob CoMMrTTEE Named. Mayor Lane yesterday named Judge Seneca Smith, P. E. Sullivan and Thomas G. Greene as a special committee to as sist H. M. Esterly. J. A. Newell and John Montag, the bridge committee. In com pilings report to the Executive Board on the East Twenty-eighth-street rein forced concrete bridge. As soon as the report is ready, a special meeting of the Board will be called to act upon it. The structure Is severely criticised by ex perts. New York Societt Meeting. The New Tork Society of Oregon will hold Its regular monthly meeting tonight, at the residence of Mrs. James W. Tifft, 351 West Park street. An amendment of the constitution will be considered. An entertaining programme will be rendered and an enjoyable evening is assured to all who attend. . All former New Tork ers are cordially invited. Funeral or James N. Leach. Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon over the remains of James N. Leach, an old-time resident of Portland, who died suddenly of heart disease on Satur day, at his home. 349 Sixth street. For a number of .years he conducted a grist mill and In later years hns been running a saloon. He was 58 years old and Is survived by a widow. The body was cremated. Push Club Meetino.
