HEAVY Dl'TY OX GERMAN' HOPS
Importation of 30.000 Pounds Xet
$3600. in Customs.
Duty was paid yesterday at the Cun-tom-Hou8e
on 30.000 pounds of hops
Imported from" German-. Willie this
Is said not to be an unusual Importa
tion, there Is a rather remarkable fact
In the amount of duty paid compared
with the price of Oregon hops. The
duty was paid at the rate of 12 cents
a pound, and the market price of local
hops yesterday was 8 cents. It Is said
by a local dealer In hops that most
brewers in this country prefer Oregon
hops to the foreign article, but that
om other brewers are of the opinion
that a certain flavor or quality is
found In the foreign hops that, so far,
growers in this country have been un
able to produce.
