unconscious and la slowly rfylnff.
Hf fore maklnir the attempt at self
destruction Mrs. Cowper had written
a number of letter, one to her lawyer.
nother to the Coroner, a third to an
undertaker, and a fourth to John
llon.l. a friend. In the letters she ap
prised the four persona of her Inten
tl jn to commit suicide.
Arrives to Kind Her Dying.
At ' about the inoinent when Mrs.
Cowper pressed her tinK.T to the triK
cer the letter nildressed to John Hood
was l.rliiK delivered. Mr. Hood read
tie first few lines, grabbed his hat
un.l r:.n to the St. U.-os Hotel.
Tlie clerk secured a pxss key and
luirried l the r..om of Mrs. Cowper.
accompanied bv Mr. Hood and a maid.
Tliev found -Mrs. Cowper lying In bed
with the pillow- still over her head and
the revolver clutched In her hand. The
liedflnthing whs stained crimson.
Invest is it Ion showed that Mrs. Cow
per nail nilo careful preparations to
end her life. In addition to writing a
litter notifying her lawyer. County
JiKlce H. K. Koyce. of Mlddletown, N.
Y. to take charge of her body, she had
..rilered an undertaker to prepare It
for burial, and hud written painstak
ingly a brief autobiography.
Her Own. Life History.
The sketch stated that she was born
In Kngland of American parents, and
at the aue of three months came to
this eountrv. Her maiden name was
Kle.inor Merrnii. Her stage career
b.-can in Boston In a production called
Youth." Mrs. Cowper gave a list of
various productions she had appeared
In. She wrote four playa, which were
produced on Broadway. They were;
I'nirv Farm." "In I.ove." "A Broad
way Favorite" and "A I-ast Rehearsal."
Her attorneys say she had a good in
come from royalties on these plays.
She made iter first appearance on the
stage In a Hoston theater in a play called
Youth.'" in which the present Mrs.
Catherine Clemmons llould e-ppeared.
Afterward she. played in several of
Charles Frohmnn's productions. Afford
ing to her hlsiary. Mrs. Cowper was with
"nnnl.i Havenport two seasons, and had
this t- say of that engagement:
She took an interest In me and pro
moted me from a small part to that of
leading" lady."
Mrs. Cowper did not give the date
ef her marriage, referring briefly to
tie fact that her husband. Archibald
Cowp r. was an actor, and that he died
three years ago. Virtually her only
home life was when she lived on the
farm of James H. YValllck, at Middle
town. X. V. -Mr. Wallick. who was 66
years old. collaborated with her in a
number of the plays she wrote.
Imitated IVallick's Suicide.
Mr. Wallick committed suicide last
April, and his tragic death seemed
to have made a deep Impression upon
Mrs. Cowper. He shot himself In the
right temple. Mrs. Cowper tried to
kill herself In identically the same
manner today.
The police endeavored to get Into
telephone communication with Judge
Koyce. of Middletow-n. and learned
titat lie was on his way to Xew York,
having received a letter from Mrs.
Cowper saving that she intended to
kill herself. He arrived at the hotel
to rind the police In charge of the dy
ing woman. In the letter that Mrs.
o per wrotn to Judge Royce she asked
him to notify her parents In Xew
Hampshire of her death and to take
charge of her body. She asked that
her body be cremated.
Trie police said that Mrs. Cowper
was a prisoner, but she was not re
moved from her apartmenfs at the ho
tel, as the doctors said that she had
small chance to live, and to take her
to a hospital probably would hasten
t lie end.
