AGED RECLUSE FOUND DEAD HERMIT OF SWAX ISLAND DIES ON SCOW. Was .Man of Mystery and Never Told Name to His Two Acquain tances In Portland. An old man, whose name the author ities have not yet been able to learn, but who was known as the Hermit of Swan Island, was found dead yester day morning at 9 o-clock on the floor of a small soow which the Willam ette's high water had left aground on the Island's shore, and which had long been the home of the - recluse. Al though no autopsy has been performed. it Is believed that death was the re- i suit of natnral causes. The body was found by S. F. Morrison and J. H. Phe lan, ranchers, who lease the island. It bore no marks of violence and death had occurred from 24 to 48 hours be fore the discovery was made. Little is known of the white-haired castaway save a few facts which have been gleaned In. occasional chats with him by the ranchers. Morrison and Phelan. They leased the island a year ago and the old fellow was there then and had been living there for an in definite period. Ho spoke German and broken Knglish. and wore clothing more tattered, torn and patched than that of a veritable Robinson Crusoe. He told them that he had a sister liv ing In Germany whom he had loaned JIT.1 on a note, which was soon to become due. and that le then expected to go back to his native land. They did not learn his name or that of his sister, and he steadfastly refused their offers to quarter him at ' their home. Occasionally he did chores for them. He had not been away from the Island during the past year. Whenever Morrison and Phelan went to town they would go by his scow and purchase any supplies that he wanted. He was last- seen n.llve on Tuesday. Yesterday morning the two men were riding over the island round ing up their cattle and passed the scow. They called, and getting no response went inside. The body was lying on the floor by the bed. fully dressed. The men secured a boat and rowing up to the dock of the North Pacific Mill Company telephoned to the Coroner's office. Deputy Coroner Dunning took charge of the remains. He searched among his effects, but could find nothing to show that he had been in communication with friends or relatives. A bank ' book showing deposits of $7S.M at the Se curity Savings & Trust Company was found In his pocket. Its number is 13325. His name will be learned from the bank officials today. An autopsy has been ordered to ascertain the cause of death. The tenants of the Island told the deputy coroner that the dead man had spoken of his relatives In Germany as If they were well-to-do people. It Is not known how long he had been liv ing about Portland or where he came from. He was between 60 and 70 years of age and wore a long, flowing beard.
