PRICE RANGE OF CENT Contradictory Reports From Argen tina Liberal Sales for Export at Piilnth Domestic Crop News. CHICAGO. Nov. 20. Nervousness charac terlsoad trading In the wheat pit and prices nuctuated over a range of 1 cv-nt. The prvalliog tendW-ncy was toward higher prlcea. Liberal receipts caused several set backs, but each decline was met by urgen buying by shorts, which resulted In a fresh rally. Argentine advices and th-a continued dry weather in this country were the prin cipal strengthening Influences. One of the Argentine reports claimed that not more than 90.000.000 bushels of wheat will be available for export from this year's crop, while another dispatch said that frost had been reported in some localities. The bears derived some satisfaction from still another rport. which estimated the exportable sur- plus of wheat from Argentina at 149.tOft.om bushels. Heavy receipts, .both In the North west and Southwest also tended to inspire some swiling throughout the day. Demand for cash wheat in Hie local market was dull and prices were steady. iuluth re ported export sales aggregating 250.000 bushels, mostly of durum and low-grado Manitoba wheat. The market closed strong with prlcea near the top with December at $1.04 and May at $1. OSS Corn was bullishly influenced by the com paratively small receipts, arrivals being very light considering the excellent weather now prevailing for the movement. STOCKS FILL SHARPLY ALL SUPPORT APPARENTLY WITHDRAWN- FROM MARKET. Shorts Make Fierce Raid on Prices, but Near the Close Decline Is Checked. NEW TORK, Nov. 20. The reactionary force wbtch. baa been gathering strength in the ato-k market for several days caused a sharp fall in prices today. The declines trained such headway as to lead to a strong; upward reaction in the latter part of the day on the assumption that weak accounta had been cleared away. There was no change in the favorable na ture of the news from all points of the pix-K-rew of industry and business toward restora tion. Yet prices crumbled in helpless fash ion and with increasing velocity, after the invariable manner of 'ncursiona upon a weak speculative position. The fact that the float ing market supply of stocks has been passing from wronger to weaker hands for over two week, past has been a subject of general ob servation. Tha proceas of realizing profits was easy at first, with the substantial Inrush of new buy ers, after the election uncertainties were out of the way. It was helped at a later stage by artificial supporting measures, aa has been pointed out. such as bidding up of a few ae lected individual stocjts with unrealized ru mors of Important developments pending which were to affect these special stocks. The de creasing aupport of the market waa obvloua ? yesterday and led to the auspiclon that spec ulative realizing by the organized market leaders has been pretty well completed. Today the supporting tactics were, almost abandoned and the market was left to take care of Itaelf until the fierce onslaught of the shorts at the last. The decline, once In furce. the existence of numerous weakly margined accounts waa dis closed, which were forced to sell by the fall in prices. Stop-loss orders were encountered also, 'placed aa a precaution below the market by those who have been distrustful of its sta bility. The bear party in the speculation, which has been quiescent for weeks, plucked up courage In view of the-manifest deteriora tion in the position of the market. There has b-en a marked falling off in the volume of outside buying orders for atocks since the. ad vance in prices halted. It is the tost of the r lvancing tendency which attracts much buy ing of this daes and a fall In prices brings In seller from ecatttTed sources who are dis couraged by the failure oz profits to accrue on the holdings. While there wpre no unfavorable news de velopment which could serve a an active factor in precipitating the selling, the fact of the reaction in stock, directed attention to some circumstances ' which were ignored dur ing the advance. For Instance, there wer in creased apprehensions over the effects of the movement to revise the tariff. Advices of po litical developments were regarded aa indicat ing more drastic action in thla direction than haa b-n supposed likely. Time money was called soft in tone, and tha known movements of money promised a substantia) cash gain for the banks on -the week. The strong tone at the cloas was caused by the retreat of the shorts, who feared that they had been led Into a trap by the bull element, helping the appearance of weakness in the market. Bonds were easy. Total sales, par value. H. .44. 000. United Statea bond, were un changed on call. CITING STOCK QUOTATIONS. ' Closing Sale.. High. Ixw. Bid. GAINS In Every Line of Business Ex pansion Is the Rule. .v : TRADE GROWS EACH WEEK 3Ianufacturing Plants Increase Their Capacity and Extensive Plans for the Future Made. Fewer Idle Cars. NEW YORK, Nor. 20. R. ' G. Dunn A Co.'s weekly review of trade tomorrow will say: Gains are almost universal, every week surpassing Its predecessor in volume of trade while manufacturing plants increase active capacity and confidence is finding expres sion In extensive plans for the future. At many pornts seasonable weather ha stimulated demand for Winter goods, and there Is a gratifying change for the better In regard to the promptness 01 collections. Som-3 sections are backward. however, either because the temperatures continue too high or on account of the failure to market crops promptly. Frequent evidences of depleted stocks in the hands of dealers are noted, especially when shipping departments work overtime in order to make sufficiently prompt doliveries. Hides are stronger, but the upward ten dency of packer stock may be checked by the increasing receipts of cattle. SMAI.l.KR KIMBER OF IDI.K CARS. Trade Expanding In Wholesale and .lobbing Lines. NEW YORK, Nov. 20. Bradstreefs to morrow will say: Enlargement and advancement are still the dominant influences in trade and the volume of orders booked by wholesalers and manufacturers continues large, partic ularly in the commercial and manufactur ing centers of the North, Kast p.nd West, still, certain evidences of irreguiarity aim found in the teports that mild weather is retarding sales of Winter goods at retail in the above sections, and Southern advices are -that improvement in that section is rather slower than expected and that low cotton prices and the holding of that pro duct by the producers ana checking trade and collections. Idle cares are reported growing fewer in number rapidly. Lumber Is qulter and flour in less oVimand for export. In whole sale and jobbing lines, north, east and west reports are generally that trade Is ex panding that Spring purchases are increas ing, and that stocks in final distributors' hands ana light.
