TRICKED By SUITOR Miss Harriet Chapin Says She Is Victim of Perfidy. ADMITS THEFT OF $260 English Woman Who Eloped From YancouTer, B. C, Wllh Jacob Phillips, Xow in Cell, Tells Story of Hi Duplioitf. MiM Harriet Chapin, the young Hlisllali wnun who eloped from Vancouver.. B. C. with Jacob Phillip, a ealeeman, and u arrested here after Phillips had re fused to marry her because she confessed to bavins been married before. Is to And herself In serious trouble before the end of the week. Although the local po lice had telegraphic Instructions from ' Vancouver and Seattle to hold the woman it did not become known until yester day forenoon that she is accused of having embwxJed W immediately before her elopement with the salesman. The money was lanen irom .. of Seattle, and the young woman freely admits having taken it. In confMslnir her puilt Miss Chapin tells a remarkable story of the duplicity of her suitor. Although she admits having eloped with the man from Van ' corner on his promise to marry her she row says she can see that he has been tricking- her from the first. In her cell at the City Jail, last night, she declared that while she may have been enamored of the man a few days ago she could kill hlra now If the opportunity came. Prisoner of Unusual Type. Miss Chapin is typically an English woman. In appearance, speech and man ners She Is trrtl educated, refined and strikingly handsome. The City Jail has never before harbored o unusual a Her'etnry of her present predicament is one of blind confidence In an unworthy rascal Her association with the man grew out of the fact that she was thousands of miles from her home In Kngland and among strangers, except for dstant rela tives, at Vancouver, who took only" a passing interest In her. Here Is the story of her elopement and the coneequences. in her own words: I met Phillips, or Chapin. to use his right name. In Vancouver where I was stopping with an aunt. He wanted to marry me and )pt insisting until I finally listened to him. I went to Seat tle to meet him. It is not true that we left that place hurriedly, for he told me I had beer go to work there for awhile as he had to earn more money before we could get married. I then went to work for Clark O' Bryan as his stenographer, i had learned that business in England and am considered an expert. Urged Her to Steal. "Well, my health became poor and I thought I would have to quit wort but Mr tfBryan told me that he had to leave town for a few day. "d that if I ouM stay and take charge of his office he would give me two weeks' vacation. I agreed to this. Before leaving, he gave me niy wk , wages. TVhen Phillips met me he asked ,o borrow that money and I n ld neednt work for Mr. OBran any ToTger. I told him I would have to re main until Mr. O-Bryan returned, as he had 1 me two drafts to pay cla.ms '"Phmlps or cTplin. then demanded that I get the money for him. I ..Yd that was the correct thing to . do as It would enable us to leave o get married. He told me that money was In my charge I could take It without getting Into trouijle-t hat all O-Bryan could do was sue me for breach "'ikV'a foo. I did this. I got the draft. and turned them right over to Phlllirs. He got the money and we came on to ?ort!and. When we arrived here he took the money and started In business as a ladles- tailor. Then another woman showed up. a married woman with four children. He at once began to pretend that he was worried because of my pre vious husband. I told him I hadn t heard from my husband in three years, and that ha must be dead, but that to remove all doubts I d get a divorce. He then wanted me to go to Spokane and go to work and wait for him there, even threatening to tell the police of the taking of those drafts. Insisted on Telling Police. "He even went so far as to start for the police station, saying he Intended to trll on me. By this time I was sick and ttred of the affair and insisted on going to the station and telling the police. "We. were locked up for registering aa man and wife without being really mar ried Then the word came that I was wanted at Seattle. We are both under sentence of ten days, and I Intend to see that the devil in the case geta his Juit deserts. He's the one that did the steal ing If any was done. My only offense has been in allowing myself to become a confiding fool. But believe me. It is not ' constitutional, and once I get clear of this mixup I shall be very wary about nrr believing anything a man says. I ve be?n fooled twice, but never will be It is believed the Seattle authorities will send for the couple before the expiration of the ten da which they are- now serv ing in the City "jail. Whether criminal charges rest agninst either of them at Vancouver Is not yet positively known, although the young woman denies that anything wrong was done at that point.
