RISE SPENDS ITS FORCE Slowinij Down of Orders From the Outside Only a Few Issues Are V Strong, and They Touch Highest Levels. NEW YORK. Nov. 18. There ws no new Incident today which acted as a determin ing factor on the movement of Dricea of stock., although the operator In the board room and at stock quotation ticker, were alert, as usual. In ranging the world for sign, of .uch new.. - In it. .absence, the market showed the waning Influence of some of thl older factors which have been active for some time past, notably since election. There came Into consideration again a Wall-atreet aphorism which says that "prices cannot move In cne direction all the time." This truism Is lost sight of In periods of speculative excitement and the fact of Its coming Into view Is "tn Itself "testimony to the subsidence of excitement of the less reajfbned kind, such as there was on the most active days of last week. The decrease of activity in the market Is evi dence In the same direction. Commission houses report that tne vol ume of orders from clients In scattered lo calities has fallen off in the last few days. Whether from the fact that existing de mand has been filled or th? dearncss of prices has lessened the attraction of stocks or suspicion has been aroused of an ele ment of manipulation in the market which precludes a possible reaction, the decreaso In the buying of stocks Is obvious. ' The rise in Southern Pacific to above 120 established a new- record for that stock, and Union Pacific. St. Paul and Northern Pacific aold at the highest prices of tiie present year. The tendency of prices to sag while such influential stock, as ttiooe mentioned were advancing was proof of the strain to which t ie support of the mar ket was being subjected. The feeliag of distrust gathered force and caused a general decline In the latter part of the day. with the reactionary ten dency of prices established, there grew up discussions of the possibility of some set back in business from the first pace having been too rapid. The failure of copper to hold Its advance furnished a text for such discussion. The professional element has been watching for a reaction based on technical grounds for several days and their rush lo forward the movement heloed ma terially to extend the reaction late today Bond, were irregular. Total sales, oar value. $.-,.412,000. United State, bonds were unchanged on call. CLOSING STOCK QUOTATIONS. Closing . , Sales. High. Low. BUT GAIN IS NOT HELD Sharp Advance Causes Realizing and Prices Drop to the Opening Level. Foreign Markets Xot Affect ed by Chicago Movement. CHICAGO. Nov. 18. Men and not condi tions were responsible for the sharp upturn In wheat today, setting of new high marks being made possvole by support from the sev eral bulls which caused active buying by local shorts. Although some news of a bull kh nature was received, the larger part of the gossip was fa,vorab!e to the bears. To day's market was W -reversal of that of yes terday, the greatest activity and strength be ing manifested during the first half of the session and dullness and weakness late in the day. The market opened weak at de clines of V6c and continued heavy during the first half hour. Support from the leading bulls' then started urgent buying by shorts, which soon carried prices up with a bound. The sharp advance brought liberal realizing sales, which caused a drop in prices to the opening level. The early weakness was due chiefly to the Indifference Of foregn grain markets to the bulge here yeMerday and the heaviness late In the session was based main ly on a report which claimed the long-existing drouth In Southern Argentina had been broken. A report which gave comfort to the bulls was one made by an excellent author ity and which -stated that previous figures from the same sources of the exportable sur plus of wheat in Argentina would have to be considerably reduced, as a re mil t of the drouth. Export business was slack, three boatloads being the extent of the business reported for the day, and thle was probably low-grade Manitoba or Durum. The market closed weak at declines of to f,c, December at fl.03t41ffI.O3a4 and May a'. H1.08H- ' The com market closed fairly steady, with prices up to c.
