THE MORNING OREGOXIAN-. SATURDAY, yOTEMBER 7, 19Q3. 1 i i ' J I v- -rnnav 1 JCKAL. E&TATB UK4LEBI. HE DANGER Officials Take Steps to Pro tect Museum From Fire. CLOSE CALL RECENTLY People Shocked to I.c-am Beautiful Chateau Few Weeks Ago Would Have Been Destroyed Had Flames Spread. BT A. W. IAMOURET7X. PARIS, Nov. . SplcaI. It seems to h&vr suddenly dawned on the official mind that a public mu seum like the Louvre, or an historical chateau like that of- Versailles, might be liable to burn down as well as an ordinary cltlxen's residence. -The fact that It Is a public monument does not make It fireproof. A hint to this effect was (riven to those who are In charge of these na tional treasure houses of art by an Incipient fire at Versailles a few weeks ago. and a stronger hint was given Immediately afterwards by the burning; down of the telephone bullulnjr. The fire which broke out In the Chateau of Versailles was, luckily enough. Im mediately put out by the guards, who happened to have noticed It In time, but then the question arose, what would have happened if the fire had acquired some headway? People were shocked to learn that the beautiful chateau, with its im mense treasures of art, would be com pletely at the mercy of the flames. Tne water In the reservoir was suf ficient for the fountains and the amusement of the Sunday crowds, but the pressure was not enough to carry It hlRher than the fln.t floor of the building. A scare was raised, and the authorities have now let It be known that protective measures are to be taken. The under secretary for fine arts baa had a talk with all keepers of the public museums, and asked them to hand In a report as to the requirements of their institutions to protect them against fire. Funds which are allowed for repairs are to be used first of all In making all neces sary arrangements to protect the build ings against fire. The Louvre Itself Is in serious danger, and orders have been given to take out all the furnaces used for oentral heating from the basement, and they are to be placed away from the main building undvr the gardens. The telephone fire was bad enough for Paris, but the burning down of the Louvre would have been a national disaster. PASSING OF THE YANKEES Few of the Ileal Stock Left Around Xew England. New York Herald. Recent census Investigations, to together with the result of genealogi cal researches, have brought to light the surprising fact that the real Yankee is fast disappearing. Like his predecessor, the American Indian, this original stock of the first white set tlers In New England Is paslng. wifh this difference, that while the Indian ' has been eliminated the Yankee Is be ing absorbed. Abroad, particularly in England, the custom still holds of referring to all Americans as Yankees, and this ac counts for the survival of a term which will soon have no real application. The day Is not far distant. It would seem, which will mark the last of the real Yankees, when a chronicler may tell of their passing as Cooper told of the last of the Mohicans. Indeed, the disappearance of the real Yankee from New England Is In many ways similar to the disappear ance of the Indian. Each race in turn, after dominating a very large territory, centered more and more In one small district. With the red men of New England thts was the territory on which King Philip made his last stand; with the Yankee It Is Cape Cod. On Cape Cod, Indeed, the Yankee Is Mill to be found. It was there that he first settled, and It seems likely it Is there that he will last survive For more than 200 years this sandy spit of land has been the center of Yankeedom. generation following gen eration with less change in all that time than has occurred in the last two decades. It was at Provlncetown that the Pil grims landed nearly three centuries ago, so that the cape comes naturally by Its Yankee stoek. Indeed, It Is only of recent years that Cape Cod has felt the en croaching effect of modernity. From this sea-washed stretch of land the early Yankees sailed forth to cover the world of trade with their fleet of clipper ships, Just as their forbears did from the "tight little Island" on the opposite side of the Atlantic These original Yankees took to the sea like young ducks, almost as soon as they were able to leave their mother's wring. They manned and officered the little home-built merchantmen, which sailed from Boston and New England ports in the colonial days. The Infant navy of the eolonles In the Revolution was alive with them In every sens of the word. Dur ing the War of ISIS scarcely an able bodied man remained In a cape village; young and old they were afloat, either In the regular service or on privateers, to harass the British flag on the high seas. Thereafter, from the close of that con flict through the Civil War and until the late '70s. wherever an American ship was cruising and that was in almost every sea her skipper, mates and crew men were likely to be Cape Coders, born and bred. But Cape Cod has changed greatly In the last quarter of a century. Its sons to lonr go to sea. There are a few steamship captains In active service and a few a very few skippers of fishing schooners. But even the fishing indus try has left the cape to find new quar ters at Gloucester or Boston. Cranberry growing and the taking of Summer boarders are the chief occupations in the cape villages nowadays. Mountain Alr'a Good Influence). London Evening Standard. The influence of the mountain la lure and holy, giving strength and sim plicity, encouragelng the older virtues, discouraging the newer vices. In the hill men of Wales we see this clearly enough. Go where you will among the wilder and more mountainous parts of Wale, and you will find that rare in dependence and self-reliance which are not marred by a curiously defiant dis courtesy. You find there those who are truly "nature's gentlemen." WILY METEOROI.OGICAI. REPORT. PORTIANI. Nov. 9. Maximum tempera ture. I d'-ftreee; minimum. 41 decree" Hlver rAdins t S A.
