The couple didn't know It was necessary to secure a i rtlflrate and omitted that part of the ceremony, although they secured the eider's receipt. They explained that thev were man and wife and said they couid prove It by all their neighbors In South Portland. But when asked If ti,y could show a certificate the coupls admitted that they had nothing more than a Mormon elder's receipt. Thev were taken to the Police Station and required to furnish ball. Yesterday morning they were on hand before Muni cipal Judge Van .ante and had several of their neighbors with them. During the past four vears they had been laboring under the Impression that they were duly and formally married, they said, and all their neighbors had known them as man and wife and received them as such. It seems the most absurd thing In the world to sav now that we are not married a mply because we haven t a regular fo-m of certificate.- said Mrs. Bennett. were married with ceremony In the pret ence of friend and I don't see how you can get around that fact." Judge Van Xante explained the difficul ties that might arise in the event of property disputes and suggested that since the formal certificate serves as a record of marriage. It would be better for them as well as the community at large, for them to secure a license and be re married. "It seems rather strange for a fellow to be marrying Ills own wife after he's al ready been married to her four years," said feennett. "but I II do It rather than have any shadow of question as to the legality of our marriage." Accordingly the couple went before County Clerk Fields, secured a license, and later In the day were remarried by Justice of the Peace Olson. They now haw a certificate that they promise to take good care of. TOTAL MAY BE $7000 v ' Tag Day Receipts for Baby Home Larger Than First Reported. County Clerk Fields Is satisfied that a great many laboring men will not have a chance to vote. "In many of the thickly populated pre cincts." said County Clerk Fields yester day, "It will be practically Impossible for all of the registered voters to vote De tween the houra of 8 A. M.-and 7 P. Their hours of employment are such that they can not reach their voting places after quit ting work before 6:30 P. "For several days I have been urging that the mills and factories and all other large employers of labor grant their men a half holiday tomorrow so. as to enable them to vote. I have received no assur ance that such a concession has been granted and for that reason I have ad vised the eleotion boards to permit every man to vote, who Is in line at his proper, voting place at 7 P. At a meeting yesterday the executive committee of the Democratic State Cen tral Committee adopted a resolution re questing the mills and factories to give their employes a two-hour holiday today in order to Insure as full a vote as possi ble.
